Hypocrisy in Six Flags' Deaf Awareness Day?

refer to post #2 (there is a reason)

then ask the person who posted #2.

I am not responsible for all Deaf people. We all have different ways of thinking too.

So, when a deaf person comes on here complaining about there being no ASL interpreter services, should HoH mock them?

But more specifically, why the heck do you think I was singling YOU out in this thread when my questions were in general.

Wouldn't captioning work for all Deaf-deaf-hard of hearing people? Isn't written language something they all can understand?

Yea, it would.

I really do not understand this line of questioning.

If oral deaf people feel left out at these events, then contact the amusement parks or the person responsible for arranging these events. I and I am sure many other Deaf people have no issues with captioning or CART systems.

It should. I certainly didn't see Deaf people demanding imbedded ASL interpreters at movie theaters. They wanted captioning. So, it'd make more sense to have captioning at those Six Flags shows.

Who is mocking the oral deaf people here?

That I agree..it wasnt something that I wasnt aware and I dont know if my friends were aware either. I cant speak for the whole Deaf population. Now it has been brought to my attention and if any oral deaf people want help in advocation in getting their needs met, I will be more than happy to help. Just dont insult us, Deaf people for something we arent really responsible for.

I had no "line of questioning". I just threw my 2 cents in.

Fine, should we hope they get these opening captioning done at those Six Flags shows every day from day one when the parks opens to the last day combined with one day of "Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness" that come with ASL interpreters? Fair?

I read this whole tread and I don't understand who insulted Deaf people?? Maybe I'll read it again....

I said HoH (get your terminology correct). HoH do not consider themselves to be deaf.

Instead of getting offended why don't you post helpful information (after all, it is how the DEaf got advocates in the first place):

Not all HoH speak; many signs. Many HoH considers themselves as Deaf. What the big deal?

The important thing here is to identify the method of communication. There's a reason why the terminology "ASL-deaf" was invented alongside "oral deaf."

Quit mincing words here.

why are you asking us? ask the Six Flags. they are the host. if they choose to be ignorant... we'll scream hypocrisy and discrimination with you.

Hard of Hearing Advocates -- Solutions for Better Hearing

Yes and no, Steinhauer. People with mild or moderate hearing loss do consider themselves to be hoh. It think it's the words "oral deaf" is misleading and even insulting to some because most of them go by aurally when it comes to speaking and listening, and not "oral."

Not a bad idea if they did, then deaf people can talk to them.

But no, they don't have to learn sign languages, nor ASL deaf should do all the advocating for them when they have their own battle to worry about (like making sure they have an ASL interpreter there). I mean, I don't see Oral-only HOH/deaf advocating for ASL interpreter for the ASL deaf when they have their own problems to worry about. This doesn't mean neither support each other. It just mean that only people who know what works for themselves have to speak out what they need to get other people to listen (yes, even get support from deaf people who use ASL to join in their fight). Again this doesn't mean none of them support each other.

Shel never said she doesn't support Captioning.

My thoughts exactly..

when I go to these events, I admit I am not there to advocate for equality for all deaf/hoh people. I am there to have fun and to understand the shows.

If someone who was there wasnt understanding ASL and asked me why there was no captioning, then I would have something to think about and take into consideration.

Oral deaf/hoh are people who dont know ASL or any signed languages, right?

I grew up orally and learned ASL at the age of 25 so I was an oral deaf person.

If someone wants to refer themselves HOH, that's fine but there are HOH people who are fluent in ASL so how do we know who knows ASL and who doesnt hence the term "oral"?

If there is another better term for those deaf/hoh who dont know sign language, pls let me know and I will be more than happy to change my wording.

It was just the terminology I grew up with and identified with.
