Strongman event - Hummer Tires

This included. Exploding muscle mass during a power lift comes to mind.

I would put that under "natural consequences"... just like any other activity.

Negative personal choices... are not so natural. :p

Well, natural only insofar as this type of extreme development can be expected to result in such things. Unnatural in that chemicals such as anabolic steroids and unhealthy work out habits predicated it.

Give me the brain! Gotta have a convo with 'em sometime!

But seriously...think what could be accomplished if the same amount of effort was put into something that could actually be beneficial to society.:cool2:

Jillio, you know that I love you and all but I have to disagree with you there. I spend a lot of time at the gym because I am hoping to run in a marathon someday. I would hate it if someone told me that I was wasting my time at the gym and could have done something else more beneficial to society. Sometimes, everyone needs some "me" time and mine is getting fit again. Maybe, Kokonut's "me" time is this activity.

Dont hurt me!!! *runs and hides*! :giggle:

You know what? I've always admired people when they have a goal to improve oneself physically, or even plan for a contest. It takes dedication, planning, and lots of disclipine to achieve a desired result. Some people are just born naturally strong, fast, quick or able to run for long distances while others must struggle to achieve the same results. Some prefer lifting, others in bodybuilding contests, marathon runs, triathalons, decathalons, olympics, football, and so on.

it's fine as long as you do it in moderation. that's the key. there are much more dangerous things out there that are legal - alcohol, tobacco, hydrocodone, dextromethorphan, and so on. i feel bad for you if you've fell for the reefer madness. You cannot overdose on marijuauna but certainly you can with alcohol...easily so. I don't do either of them but I certainly see marijuana as the lesser drug than alcohol in terms of ingestion and abuse.

X2.

Each and every one of us has certain talents. Some of us are really good at math and some of us can write eloquently and some of us can lift hummer tires. I see nothing wrong with developing talents as long as they aren't harmful to yourself or others.

Well, you need to define exactly what constitutes as "harmful" to onself. Arm wrestling can be harmful risking broken forearm bone, dislocated shoulder, tendon tears. There is risk in every sports or exercise taken upon. People have died in marathon races. I've seen broken fingers and one leg in a strongman competion. Even cheerleading can be risky and some have even died because of it. So, it gets a little redundant when pointing the "dangers" in strongman events when sports are inherently risky in the first place.

And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life."

Ahh...but here is the difference. You are doing something that actually improves your health because you are doing it in moderation. You are not going to the extremes that these people go to. They take what is intended to provide a health benefit, and use it in a manner that actually causes harm to the body. The distortion in muscle mass creates all kinds of problems for these people.

I don't have anything against a healthy work out. I do yoga 3 times a week myself. It is the excess. Just like super thin women create an environment that increases the incidence of eating disorders for girls, just because most women cannot realistically achieve a body that thin without doing something drastic to themselves. This sets the same example up for young men, and creates an environment where we see an increase in the incidence of exercise bulemia.

How do you know where your limits are unless you try to find them?

You'd be living in a completely different world if people didn't try to find the limits of things-both physical and mental.

That's true, Glenn. It's called "challenge." Set your goal and aim for it. This require discipline and dedication.

here's a clarification - You are already a professional in your field. You already worked hard to achieve it. Now you are working and doing work-out afterward and raising your family. In the end - do you have any time and energy to pursue other intellectual endeavor other than your field? That's the thing. It's not impossible but it's extraordinary difficult.

How can one have so much time for work and gym and other intellectual endeavor together? hence.... Jillio's post below -

Quite true. And when one must put the time and effort into training that goes with these type of competitions, then brawn always becomes the dominant feature. It has to by default. There aren't enough hours in the day remaining to pursue intellectual endeavors.

yes. unfortunately - we have only 24 hours per day and other responsibilities. one cannot pursue multiple challenges at same time.... no matter how much discipline and dedication you have. Even a samurai master knows. :cool2:

kokonut - I'm curious... do you know if any of these Strongman competitors are in "intellectual" field that does not require brawn?

I am not sure I understand the point you are trying to make. Can you clarify?

ok - you mentioned that you want to try marathon. let's assume that you're very serious about it. serious enough to make it to top 20... or even top 50. Do you think you can achieve that along with your family responsibility and work? It's not impossible but it's extremely difficult. The only way to do that is to dedicate your time and effort on it. By doing that - your time to pursue other intellectual endeavor is extremely limited.

now - about strongman competition. it's obviously a serious sport because you can get seriously injured or even permanently injured from it. to even participate in it, you need to spend a huge amount of your time building muscle. meanwhile do you really see them pursuing intellectual endeavor in their extra time? it's just not really feasible.

At the rate I am going, it probably will be years before I can participate in a marathon. I would like to do something like that to raise funds to help people in need. :dunno:

I have had enough of intellectual endeavors from my job by teaching! lol

Nah, not gonna go crazy over exercise again. Dont have the time but I would rather exercise than pursure more intellectual endevors because I have always had a love for sports and physical activity growing up along with reading.
