Was almost 14 years old and recalled watching tv news announcing about this sad event.

Was only 2 at the time, never heard of this til now... very disturbing and horrible. It was never the same with those survivors :(

I didn't paid my attention on the news and newspapers during teenage time (I was 15 years old that's time) until your thread got me attention... .

It's very sad and terrible....:(

This was before my time. I was born in 1982. I was reading the wikipedia link that Brian gave, and found this:

"Four more people who were intended to be poisoned managed to survive. Grover Davis, 79, who was hearing impaired, missed the announcement to assemble on the loudspeaker, lay down in a ditch and pretended to be dead."

Why do I find that hilarious?

I was 11, and remember feeling the eery creepiness, just as I did for the Heaven's Gate suicide folks waiting for their ride aboard a ship behind Haley's comet.

I remember about this tragedy well. The Time magazine ran a great story on this event.

Mr. Jones and his henchmen planned it in advance.

I remember Marshall Applewhite and the Heaven's Gate suicides. Wow, I haven't thought about that in years.

Yes. They say he had it planned as much as a year in advance of the actual event.

:topic: I do wish that the Jim Jones movie (starring Powers Boothe) will be available on dvd sometime. Powers' performance was positively amazing.

Actually, not all of them did. There were some who refused. If they did, they were shot to death. But, yes. Jim Jones put a bullet in his brain.

I saw that movie and it creeped me out. You're right about the performance, though!
