How are present day anti-abortionists supposed to protest against 1978 Jonestown?

People did complain about the group back in the 70's. That's why they left the USA, and why Congressman Leo Ryan went to investigate.

I was talking specifically about this thread. Looks like the pro-lifers who had the courage of their convictions would at least find it in themselves to express a bit of empathy for the children who died in this tragedy, not to mention the many vunerable adults. That was my point. Consistency in values.

I remember about Jonestown one of the cameraman for the news in Baltimore was killed.

I wasnt even alive when this happened as I was born in 1983.

I however have seen documentries on the tragedy and the very thought of those children being killed under the direction of their parents who were led by a relgious fanatic that was jacked up on every kind of drug imaginable, makes me sick to my stomach.

Not to mention that the conditions at Jonestown were not the favorable ones that Jim Jones promised. There wasn't enough food or shelter to go around and many of his followers, the ones that could, defected and returned to the United States.

One one of the documentaries I saw regarding Jonestown it was said that one follower had his life spared only because Jim Jones asked him to run an errand. That follower said he came close to killing himself because he couldn't live with the sights and smells of Jonestown for the rest of his life.

Oh yeah. I remember that day. I had just turned 12 years old when I heard of Jonestown. What baffles me is how one man can convice others to do what these hapless followers did to themselves did under the influence of Jim Jones. The bodies that I saw on tv were ... disturbing.

jim jones promised his followers peace and happiness.

unfortunately, his followers must have been in such despair that they were blinded by their own need to escape whatever it was in life that they wanted to flee from.

Yeah. I shudder to think of the despair that Gene and June Cordell went thru when they lost 20 members of the family to Jim Jones. I don't see how one can bear the loss of so many family members.

neither do i. it's sad. :(

beowulf made the reference to kool-aid because the drinks jim jones' followers died from was kool-aid laced with cyanide.

beowulf, if i am wrong about that, please correct me.

Oh I think you're quite correct. I remember one guy made fequent referrences to kool aid drinkers on a website that I used to fequent. I didn't know what he meant by that for a long time. Many conservatives like to make fun of liberals for being kool aid drinkers for being liberals because someone told them to be liberals.

yep! i'm sure the phrase "you've been drinking the kool-aid again" also came about because of jim jones.

by the way, i'm a liberal and i like kool-aid. :)
