Dell XPS-420 8GB RAM?

I was unable to access support.dell.com all evening.. Is anyone having this same problem or is it just me???

I am trying to find out if my Dell XPS-420 can be upgraded from 4GB to 8GB (I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit).. Too many websites giving me conflicting information, some said max is 4, some said max of 8..

Anyone have XPS-420 with memory > 4GB? I need to upgrade so I can run couple virtual machines on my PC.

Richard -- are you on Vista platulim edition or some higher level? Not the home preumium one though. If yes, 8gb is not a good idea, cause it can affect in crashing the operating System. I was testing out my friend's brand new computer and it have 8GB and the highest best Vista software, and guess what, whenever I do some schitt, it crashed down!!!!

know why? the computer have limited hardware.

Depends on motherboard, you need use CPUZ to check motherboard, just need find model name of motherboard then tell me, it's safer to assume that your PC support 8 GB RAM.

I own XPS 630 that support 8 GB RAM as well.

It has nothing with Vista, I have few of my friends who use Vista with 8 GB RAM, they don't have any issues with that.

It's was from motherboard issue or driver issue, or lacks of Windows update.

Yes it have something to do with Vista .. You have to buy the 64bit package Vista to use more than 4Gig ram on your motherboard ..

32-bit versions of Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate: 4GB
32-bit Windows Vista Starter: 1GB
64-bit versions of Windows Vista Home Basic: 8GB
64-bit versions of Windows Vista Home Premium: 16GB
64-bit versions of Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate: 128GB



So if you only have 32 bit Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate then don't go more than 4Gig because it will not use over 4Gig and over is a waste of memory.

Finally got official info from Dell.. It support max of 8 GB for now.. I just ordered four 2GB module from newegg..

also you go Start->Run->type msconfig and hit OK, you click tab "Services and tab "Startup", you look both are lot of programs, becuase they are automatic program make low memorys

my automatic programs
Services = 130
Startup = 19
my memory is 1gb and cpu P-D 2.8ghz
I have Vista Ultimate
all are fine, no slow
fast high speed 20mbips-30mbips !!
No problem

some memory won't work Dell, HP etc.. but only work PC Clone, you must check at website Corsair, OCZ, Kingston, you tell support list model computer, you got model memory then go order Newegg

because my work I.T., we bought memory put Dell won't work, we found website change correct model, work Dells

I never said I was having slow computer.. I am happy overall performance (except for file transfer speed which is known vista issue).. I just want to increase from 4GB to 8GB so I can run Virtualbox which I can run XP, Linux, another Vista within main OS for software testing.. Running few optimized Virtual machine take alot of memory (1 to 2GB+).

I got correct type with correct CAS timing specs. It should work.. All memory websites I checked only showing max of 1GB per slot which is not updated info.. It can do 2GB per slot with latest BIOS. I dont buy cheapest brand, I only buy well known brand.

Go check Jacob's post, that why about it has nothing with Vista if they can't read or cause any issues, it all from motherboard issue or so, regardless if they have 64 bit.

For my first statement, few of my friend that use 64 bit Vista as well, no issues with 8 GB RAM, I already know that 32 bit limited to 4 GB but in some cases, 3 GB for some motherboard.

You don't make any sense, I'm long lived newegg buyer and never have problem with RAM from newegg, I bet you are order wrong RAM model and doesn't work on any PC.

RAM is all same about how works on branded or alone built PC, need find right RAM model and don't blame on newegg.

Jacob's post did not mention if it a 32bit or 64bit Vista and yes you can expereience problem or crashes on 32bit Vista if you put too much memory. That why many websites recommand you only go up to 3 Gig of memory on 32bit Vista to avoid the chance of crashes happening.

Ok, I never goes over 3 GB for 32 bit Vista, I only use 2 GB RAM for my PC.

I picked 32 bit Vista over 64 bit to prevent any compatibility issues with software, such as games don't work so good with 64 bit.
