can u understand sign way too fast?

I'm a fast signer and my interpreter hates that!! During the course of my meeting with non-signer customers at my office, it is my interpreter's duty to translate all of my signs into voice for relaying messages/information. Often my terp will interrupt me and ask me to repeat what I just signed several times. God love her for sticking up with me at work. Even when I'm with other deaf signers, most of them seem to adapt to my style of signing and few times some would ask me to repeat my fingerspelling especially my husband.

Best off to video tape the style of ASL, and have it rewinded in slow motion, then you don't have to ask for its reptition :laugh2:

You should meet the guy I knew in 6th grade. He had a deaf relative and learned how to fingerspell really fast. He could go too fast for me to read! :eek3:

My mom is an interpreter and is a little slow with reception of fingerspelling.

There is a trick to understanding fingerspelling that is fasssst. I don't understand though why some deafs fingerspell like that. I guess its a show off thing or something.

I always try to go at a medium or medium slow pace when finger spelling. I never try to confuse the deaf or hearing. I am the same with whoever I am fingerspelling with.

I am new to hoh/deaf world and have never learned sign. I am trying to teach myself now, but if anyone signed to me anything other than the 10 words I have learned so far, I would be lost. I have a hard time with fingerspelling, perhaps because at 51, my fingers are a wee bit stiff and don't want to move correctly. But hey..if anyone wants to tell me their family members..that I can deal with.

The video had a little humor in it but when I was looking around for some example of a fast finger speller, I found this and shit! Wow..Lucky for everyone here that subtitles were provided.

I sign at what I consider to be a normal rate...unless I'm mad. People say I sign really fast when I'm angry. Oh, well.

Someone told me it's because I haven't trained my eyes that I can't understand those that fingerspelling fast. *shrugs*

I used sign language all my life and yet I sign slow. I learned from someone that in other's eyes my style is much like laid back type of person. Like I like to take my time or something. So I don't sign fast for sure. It's hard to understand people who sign fast and purely in ASL sometimes.

I sign fast when I am nervous. That's like interpreter's greatest enemy if there's a presentation coming up or something. :P

That looked like the rochester method, not sure though. Why on earth anyone feels a need to finger spell like that I just do not understand.

Rochester Method employs fingerspelling and speech. The Rochester Method is based on standard English. Each English word in a sentence is fingerspelled. This method isn't used much anymore because spelling out each word is a tedious, time consuming process.

I still use it, but only when an interpreter pisses me off. I can finger spell way fassssssster then most interpreters, so it really confuses them and makes them angry.

I can finger spell my name that fast. Seriously. Only my name though :D. I love finger spelling it fasssssssssssssst and watching all the hearies get confuzzled. :laugh2:

Now there's a mature way to facillitate communication. Maybe what you have taken for confusion on the terp's behalf is actually extreme annoyance at your juvenile behavior.

Why would you assume that someone's hearing status would prevent them from understanding your fingerspelling?
