What happened to me today!

Good, deafbajagal. Let us know how it goes with the letter and stuff like that.

Legally, they are well within their rights to turn away any customer they want. Small businesses have that right.

Are you sure about that? Small businesses are allowed to discriminate people? No, it doesn't sound right to me, unless you live in a backward country, which the US is not.

I don't think you should waste your time writing to the owner. You should write to a newspaper/local newspaper about your experience. There may even be websites that allow customers to review restaurants which you could use against him. I am sure that the more people who know about your experience, the more people who will not eat at his restaurant; like you said customers were even appalled and I am sure these customers are going to tell their families and friends.

I agree, the more the word goes out, the more people will see how it is. Also, blogging is another way to get the word out as well.

what you can do is do the undercover mission. Get another deaf customer and put the hidden camera or microphone to record the incident. If the manager is ACTUALLY refusing the serve customer because of deaf status - then yes his restaurant will be subjected to criminal investigation and civil lawsuit. OR you can notify the newspaper and they will do the undercover mission for you.

Maybe he's denying you because of legal reason and for your own safety. Who knows? Only one way to find out!

The Right to Refuse Service: Can a business refuse service to Someone because of appearance, odor or attitude? (< link)

It may be discrimination. I need to contact the Attorney General's office and see what is the status of the state's interpretation if this action would be considered "arbitrary and unlawful." Every state has its own interpretation of laws.

Regardless if it is discrimination or not, etc. It was still rude, untasteful, tacky, inconsiderate, and it pissed me off. GRRR. I will give the owner a chance to respond to my letter before I take the next step.

I went out to eat at a restaurant today, and they told me that I needed to leave because they do not serve deaf people. Period.

Geez!

What the hell? I would stand there and scream and stomp my feet and demand to be served! Let them arrest me and then the media will come out and publicity embarrass that restaurant! That is SO wrong!

Yea, write to the newspaper!

I had similar experience at Union Station. The UNO restaurant refused to serve deaf people, because they always escape away from the table right after they eating. What are you going to do about it if you are UNO restaurant manager?

Next time, you go there and if they refuse to serve you, tell them 'I ain't movin'!'

um...bad idea?

you can call attention to something without acting like a 5 year old and throwing away your dignity.

deafbajagal - please give us name and location of that restaurant. we'll raise hell with them for you

agree LET go in together in postest
and second thought call news to reavel their actions against deaf people

That's soo terrible , I would go there and talk to the manager if that didn't work take it to the media and have them exposed. That's soo wrong.

Well, it was a privately owned Chinese restaurant (not a chain restaurant). Legally, they are well within their rights to turn away any customer they want. Small businesses have that right. What I am doing is telling everyone I meet (strangers and friends) about the experience. Many people were appalled and even said they won't go back there again. I will write a letter to the owner (I have a good hutch that the man who told me I couldn't eat there was the owner) about what I think of the experience in a professional tone.

Geez, I hate rude and inconsiderate people!

Yes, every restaurant can do what they wants but... accord your 1st post, they refused to serve you because you are deaf. Did they said this to you that your deafness is the reason why they refuse to serve you? If yes, then is a discrimination...

Yes, they do not allow discriminate the people but they have the right to not serve them for no reason if they want to. It's their business, they can do what they want. If they give you the reason why they do not serve you because of your deafness, etc is then discrimination. It would cost business owner a lot of money for discriminate the people why they refuse to serve them... that's why they keep the reasons themselves quietly then you can't do anything to against them because they didn't give you their reason.

I don't think you should waste your time writing to the owner.

Yes, I think he should write a letter to demand with reason or write complaint letter to the owner first. He will know more after get the reply.... He will get a good chance to prove that it's discrimination if deafness is the reason, they refuse to serve him.

I don't think it would be good idea... The resturant owner might sue him for defamatory. First thing is contact Attorney General's office (Legal adviser) and will know more about rights.... If Attorney General Officer said that he have 100% chance to sue the resturant owner for discrimination... and said that you can go to local newspaper... If Attorney General Officer said it's not dscrimination, then you can't go to local newspaper to defame them... they can sue him for that...

Yes, you doing right thing to write a letter to the owner first.

I really can't beleive what and how they did to you... *shake my head quietly*

Do you mean the Union Station at Washington, D.C.? That's terrible! They are generalizing deaf people (assuming that ALL of the deaf people do the same thing).

I've heard there are lots of restaurants and bars in the DC area that refuse to serve Deaf people because of lousy (if at all) tips.
