Thyroid Disorders

..My family doctor told me that I have to live with pill forever...

..unless a 'cure' is found, then you wouldn't need to take them forever...therefore, I sure do hope for the sake of all those who has to take these everyday, that there will be a cure found. :)

Same here in Australia that we have only white pill. I have never seen colours pill for thyroid. I take mine after breakfast every day for the rest of my life.

Oh how lucky you are - taking a white pill that makes you white. It's because we have green pill that make us look green. Darn it. :giggle:

It would be so wonderful if there is a cure for us. It would wipe out the pill factory.

WhiteWolves64 - Oh darn it. A least that you are able to get rid of the pain with the injection. I am so sorry... I wish that I would know another way.

I know this post is kinda old but I needed this. I think it started logn time ago. When I was young I was always sporty but a healthy weight until I got pregnant with my daughter 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 I knew something was wrong, I went for so many tests. My thyroid was always "in range" but toward the low end of the scale, Doc's told me it was okay. Things kept getting worse, I got to the point I would fall asleep while talking to people, or fall asleep while driving and stopped at a red light. My insurance changed so I got another new doctor who decided to test me dispight last tests being "normal". She told me she didn't know how I was not in coma, I sure felt like I was. I would go days not even knowing what I did all day but somehow I still functioned. So I started synthroid about 8 months ago..every 6 weeks I go for blood work and bust my medicine levels. Now about 3-4 weeks ago I started having trouble swallowing, it felt like I had a speed bump in my throat. I told my doctor so she sent me for a thyroid ultrasound. The results just came back yesterday, I have 2 nodules (tumors) on the left side of my thyroid. Well because it has gotten big enough to affect my swallowing she expects the specialist will have it removed whether its cancerous or not. I am pretty nervous about it but I know it will be okay. I will be on the medicine for life but its not hard to maintain. So for all of you who have shared your story thank you for letting others know their not alone. hugs.

Passionate,

I am terribly sorry that you have the problem. I am wondering what medicine(s) that you are taking now for your thyroid? Will your doctor remove your thyroid? Our thyroid's size looks alike a butterfly on your front neck, and it is very thin gland - a sort of a cardboard. I am not so sure that you might want to get a blood test for Lyme - I am afraid to ask that question that might be important for you.

I like to read Mercola website (mercola.com) about variety of health issue, and the doctor does not believe some western medicines. Perhaps, you would find something on the website for your own issues. I take Levothyroxine 50 mcg - the lowest mcg is better in order to reduce the problems in the future which means that I have to walk a lot and some exercises so that my thyroid would function normal again. I know that it is not that simple, but I can do it. Increasing the doses that makes you fat in case if you didn't know.

There is another website that I haven't read which is on: Wilson's Temperature Syndrome -- Thyroid disease

My auntie has Fibromyalgia, this is really hard for her to cope with.

I started having thyroid problems about a year ago. Blood tests showed up positive so I had meds to take for three months. Blood test came back ok, which means meds worked. I had a break for six months, back to the doc 'cause I feeling sleepy constantly. Blood test was again positive.

Off I was for another month of meds, now I have to wait again and see how we are moving along, but I feel again that something is not quite all right  I have to get my blood test done again some time this month, so... we'll see.

I guess that as long as the meds are working on me, I'm not into much trouble, right?...

If you do not have inner health a problem such as a heart problem, kidneys, etc., then you would probably better off without the medicine - unless something really bothers you then get it back. I believe the lowest dose like 25 mcg would be a good way without increasing the dose in the future as long as you keep doing your exercise.

Without the thyroid medicine, then you still keep up your exercise no matter what. I mean after your blood test result comes out to be normal, then that is a good sign.

In short, no exercise, no walking, too many different excuses, then the person will have to take thyroid pills when he/she gets older. Thyroid pills make the person fat.

I have to accept mine because I had a 4th heart surgery (real bad one due a different infection from the hospital that I stayed on the bed longer than I expected). It is my first time to take my thyroid pills two years ago, and I probably think that I don't have a choice. My physical now is very good (no fat), except my heart condition. That's it.

I have same problem like Catmandu and some of you, ad'ers. I had my partial thyroid glands removed last Spring because my thyroid glands were swollen and sore, I felt so tired and I was sleeping a lot and my moods went up and down like yo-yo and also because the Endocrinologist found two nodules, according to the Biopsy. The surgeon and the Endocrinologist both said it's best to remove my thyroid glands. I agreed with their recommendations. A following week, my sister took me to the hospital (in Boston) for a surgery and then next day, they sent me home right after my surgery because my thyroid/calcium levels were good. My sister took care of me for a few days, to make sure that I am OK.. and then, I was on my own. It was not fun.
The surgeon's office called my sister to say that my result report was "benign". I do NOT have cancer which is good news.
I have to take Levoxyl 150MCG (The Endo just increased the dose of Levoxyl because my thyroid was very low, according to the lab. The pill's shape looks like a butterfly. The color is light green.. ), Calcium (TUMS) and Vitamin D for rest of my life.
None of my family has thyroid problems except my cousin. (My aunt's youngest daughter..)

I thought hypothyroidism is making the person gain weight. Without the pill or my thyroid stimulating hormone get too low then I gain weight.

You're right about taking low dosage is better due to osteoporosis. My dosage is is pretty high and I have to take calcium to keep from having bone loss.

I think that yes you are right aout the hypothyroidism. I was told someone that taking the pill with a slow heart beat makes you fat. Taking the pill with normal speed range would be fine. That's all I know of.

You left that part out which puzzled me because now you said you heard it from someone else. Sounds like this person has another set of problem and that should get checked out as well.
