Father Held Daughter in Cellar for 24 Years

*speechless* ...

That's just sick sick sick sick sick .. I wonder too where the mother was all this time. Either gone or I wonder if she truly didn't have a clue that her daughter was in the basement. Not likely, but who knows ??!!

Josef is scary looking. I almost get a profoundly mentally ill vibe from him.
HOW do you get so messed up that you think that having sex with someone you're closely related to, is OK? This is almost like Flowers in the Attic! UGH......I gotta say, some people really need to experiance severe punishement.
Sure it won't change anything.....but on the other hand this is the type of fucker who when tried will be puzzled as to why everyone is making such a big fuss about things. There are some truly dangerous psychopaths out there. Hopefully, Josef will be locked up in whatever Austria's version of a hoispital for the criminally insane is.

He is a very sick filthy bastard! I would like to :rifle: him and I am sure many people would like to do that too. His daughter and children are damaged already and it probably will takes them years to adjust to a normal life. I feel sorry for them.

I hope that sicko rot in jail and never come out.

This is worse than a predator kidnap hostage....to do that to your own kid and grandkids for that long a time.......no love.......granddkids 19 8 and 5 never saw the sun.....he should get the same treatment....he's old now prolly die before justice gets to him.........this kind of thing ya don't even want to believe exist....smh

I get the same mentally ill feeling from looking at his eyes, and his expression in the photos published. I also get a decided aura of superiority from him. He is indeed psychopathic and sociopathic. That is what has allowed him to get away with his crimes for so long. Sociopaths are extremely maniulative and charming. They can convince you that the sun is shining when it is pouring down rain. And you are correct. His mental illness is such that he doesn't see that he has done anything wrong. He firmly believes that his actions are justified, and that the rest of society is wrong in judging him.

The news story was about a wierdo in Austria who kept his 42 year old daughter locked in a cell, since she was 18, and fathered 7 children by her. And you think the Polygamist were bad! The news stated, they never saw the sun light entire their lives. What a pathetic of this father to her daugher and grandkids?? Sex with daughter and pregnancy with those children? Oh dear, that is extremely disgust.

Yep, it very disgusting of the father to do that to his own daughter. It just came out more deep informations in the morning newspaper today, and it also say that the mother knew something not right. But she still part of the crime. Because she did nothing to save her own daughter. I think that poor girl father and mother both should be thrown in jail for life. When I saw the photo of the girl's father, I knew something about him is mental sick man.

[QUOTE=KalistaAnd you think the Polygamist were bad!

At least those kids were well-fed, healthy and basked in the sun. I can't imagine being locked away for so long and not see daylight. The guy royally sucks.

I feel sick with pain when I watched the TV with video, photos, etc - long one... interviewed with people who lives at same village as Josef F.

I got mixed feeling and really feel pain for poor daughter and children.

Elisabeth waste 24 years life... She supposed to be married and have her own children, not that monster who father 7 children to her!!!!

Elisabeth & her mother reunioned each other in hospitail last Sunday. Mother was nerves breakdown because she knows nothing what and how it does. She beleive for a long time that Elisabeth escaped from world to religion cult and don't want to contact world.

Father forced Elisabeth to write a note that she is unable to take care of 3 children and leave them on doorstep with note... CPS (welfare for children protection) visited/inspect Josef & his wife's house because they applied for foster/adopt 3 children. CPS said everything in their house to basement are well care and clean... but they didn't noticed that small door, he hided Elisabeth and children. It's not just them, but his wife and relatives as well... that small door - they thought is for supply things... (work shop, etc).

They contact the world thru TV and video... which they never see sunlight... 5 years old boy alway want to sit on the car what he saw from TV until they freed from basement... Police offered him to sit on the car... He was happy and excited and said that I can't beleive that I sit on the car... wow... It look like that he is well care but he think it's normal to live in basement with no window... no see sunlight.. .but just TV and video... It's Elisabeth who taught her children to speak and read... and watch TV...

The people, who know Josef & family and said that they are very nice and friendly and very good "Grandparents" to 3 children. 3 children attend school and social outside is very well... I can image it must be shock for them to learn that their "Grandfather" is really their father who fathered his daughter (their mother). They also reunioned with her & siblings as well.

Elisabeth look old than her own age. :(

They suggest that Josef should stay in jail between 15 and 20 years which I disagree to because he should stay in jail for rest of his life. He deserve it!!!!!!!

There'll more news to update...

This story is so sad.In all those years, something about this story does not add up.

WOW.....that's fucked up that prison sentences are so light in Europe.
Yes, most criminals aren't sociopaths. A friend of mine has done some time in jail, and he said that most criminals are just folks who made mistakes.
However, there IS a population of honest to god fucked up sociopaths who need to be locked up forever, like in a insistution for the criminally insane.

Europe Riveted by Ongoing Austrian Incest Revelations

Europe looked on horrified as details continued to emerge in the shocking case of an Austrian man who locked up his daughter in a cellar for years and fathered seven children with her.

The children involved in a horrifying case of incest and abuse in Austria are expected to get new identities, officials there said, after DNA tests proved that 73 year old engineer Josef Fritzl had fathered the children with his 42 year old daughter, Elisabeth.

Three of the children lived upstairs with Fritzl and his wife, 69 year old Rosemarie, while three lived locked underground in a tiny cell with their captive mother. One child had died.

"Astonishing" reunion

Austrian authorities said on Tuesday, April 29 that members of the family terrorized by decades of incest and imprisonment had an “astonishing” reunion at a clinic, where psychiatrists are helping them cope.

Hospital officials said most of the seven children Fritzl fathered over the past 24 years with the daughter he held captive in a windowless cell spent their first moments together Sunday, April 27 -- a day after those kept confined finally gained their freedom.

Clinic director Berthold Kepplinger told reporters Tuesday the meeting also reunited the suspect's wife with the daughter Fritzl had led her to believe left home to join a religious cult, but instead was imprisoned in a cramped warren of secured and soundproofed cellar rooms.

Fritzl was remanded to court custody on Tuesday. Meanwhile, investigators are looking into suspicions that Fritzl may have had help in caring for and keeping secret the presence of a family living hidden in his basement.

Report claims son had cellar key

A report by the women’s magazine Brigitte has uncovered a claim that Fritzl’s son and Elisabeth’s brother, Thomas, had a key to the cellar. A couple who rented an upstairs room in the house, in the Austrian town of Amstetten, said that Thomas called himself the house “superintendent” and made regular trips to the cellar to get things for minor repairs.

The couple said they themselves were not allowed near the cellar, and were not allowed to rent a cellar storage room, although that his common practice in Austria.

Police are also taking into account the fact that Fritzl had made several trips to Thailand, and are looking into how the captive family may have gotten food and other goods while he was away.

Authorities have also raised the question of who may have helped the man build a cellar that includes a 300 kilogram steel and cement door. Fritzl was given permission to build the cellar as a bomb shelter in the late 1970s.

Since the case came to light, Fritzl’s 42 year old daughter, Elisabeth, and her children have been carefully shielded from public glare, undergoing psychiatric counselling to help them try to adjust after their unimaginable ordeal.

Cult cover-story for adoptive "grandkids"

Fritzl had told his wife that their daughter had run away to join a cult. In reality she was locked underground in the 60 square meter (650 square feet) underground rooms.

Mother and daughter were reunited this week for the first time in a quarter century.

Fritzl explained the presence of three of the grandchildren whom he adopted to his wife and to the community by claiming Elisabeth had given birth to them at the cult, and then delivered them to his doorstep for the older couple to care for.

Three other children – aged 19, 18 and 5 -- lived belowground with their mother in the cell. They first saw daylight when they were rescued.

Daughter's illness leads to family's release

One child, a twin, had died shortly after birth. Fritzl has admitted to burning the corpse in the house’s boiler.

The decision on which children lived aboveground and which below depended on whether they were “screaming babies” and on their general halth, explained Chief Inspector Leopold Etz from the Lower Austrian criminal investigators office.

The case came to light because one of the children, 19 year old Kerstin, was severely ill. Her “grandfather” brought the child to the hospital, which started a search for the child’s mother in the hopes of finding out her medical history. They televised an urgent call Elisabeth to come back and save the daughter’s life.

Elisabeth saw the call on television, and was able to convince her father to let her go to the hospital. She seized the chance to speak privately to a doctor and explain her situation. Fritzl was arrested the same day.

Fritzl’s admission that he burned the body of the dead seventh child could prove pivotal when the case comes to trial, with a prosecutor saying he would face a life sentence if found

guilty of manslaughter, as opposed to shorter prison terms for rape or incarceration.

Psychologist Paulus Hochgatterer, who is helping advise those counselling the family, told AFP news service that the three children Fritzl had kept underground are staying in a sequestered treatment container that could be locked from the inside.

Slow road to recovery?

Safely shielded from the media circus that has set up camp in Amstetten, he said their initial treatment could take several weeks.

"Only very gradually are they being exposed to the outside world," Hochgatterer said, adding that "given the circumstances, they're actually doing quite well."

The two sets of children are now tentatively beginning to get to know one another. The youngest child, five years old, seems most able to adapt to his new life, his caretakers said.

Experts said the family is likely to need years of therapy.

"It could take between five and eight years," said Max Friedrich, the psychiatrist who looked after another sequestration victim, Natascha Kampusch, in an interview with the daily Oesterreich.

The head of the local social services, Hans-Heinz Lenze, said a name-change had been suggested for the immediate victims, but Fritzl's other family as well, in order to give them a new start in life.

Long-term investigation expected

"At the moment, all possibilities are being sounded out in closest consultation with the family. But a decision will only be reached in the coming weeks," Lenze told a news conference on Tuesday.

Chief investigator Franz Polzer told Austrian television that police might need "half a year" to complete their investigations. He ruled out any suggestion Fritzl might have had an accomplice.

"As our investigations now stand, there were no accomplices. But you can never be 100 percent certain."

Doctors would determine when police would be allowed to question Elisabeth Fritzl and the children, but that was unlikely to be for several days.

Fritzl had officially adopted the three aboveground children, after showing authorities letters signed by Elizabeth that said she could not care for them, and which asked that they try not to track her down for the sake of herself and her children.

Fritzl was allowed to adopt despite a reported conviction of attempted rape in the 1960s and of arson, but the records were wiped after a period of time set by Austrian law.

The district court in Amstetten, which had greenlighted the adoptions, said it had followed protocol in the adoption proceedings and had had acted correctly.

No sign of wife's complicity

"There weren't any doubts about his (Fritzl's) integrity. Why should I put the child in a foster home, when it could grow up in a family," court president Josef Schoegl told the Austria Press Agency.

Chief police investigator Franz Polzer said there was no sign that Fritzl's wife, who also had seven children with him, knew of the goings on in his locked dungeon.

In the town of Amstetten, more than 200 people including dozens of youngsters quietly held a candlelight vigil in the main square late Tuesday, as the town of 23,000 sought to cast off the notoriety brought to their doorstep by Fritzl.

Shocked residents react

"Shock, sadness, rage and perhaps also hatred have gripped us these last few days," pastor Peter Boesendorfer told those gathered.

"We must acknowledge that there is something in our town that we cannot comprehend," he said, calling on residents "to help and show solidarity so that a life will be possible" for the bewildered children and their scarred mother.

Amstetten mayor Herbert Katzengruber told the Austrian news agency APA: "We want to show that Amstetten is not a town for criminals. But it's mostly about showing solidarity and help to the victims."

Residents have repeatedly insisted they saw nothing amiss before the horror story was made public on Sunday.

Kampusch speaks out on abuse case

In her first British television interview Austrian former kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch has spoken to the BBC about Austria's latest abuse scandal.

Ms Kampusch was snatched on her way to school aged 10 and held in a basement cell for more than eight years.

She was asked by BBC's Newsnight how she felt about the story of Elisabeth Fritzl, released after being imprisoned by her father in a cellar for 24 years.

She said Elisabeth and her family would need time and silence to recover.

"Little by little I realised there were parallels to my own fate," said Ms Kampusch. "So then the whole story affected me even more."

'Authoritarian education'

Asked how she thought Elisabeth Fritzl and the rest of the family could best be helped now, she replied: "They need a lot of silence... Time heals all wounds."

She also suggested Austria's history had played some part in the cases of abuse which had taken place there.

"I think this exists worldwide, but I think it's also a ramification of the Second World War and its connection to education and so on," she said.

Natascha Kampusch is determined to live as normal a life as possible

"I think it can happen everywhere and it also exists everywhere, not just in Austria."

She went on to explain: "At the time of National Socialism the suppression of women was propagated. An authoritarian education was very important."

She told the BBC she wished the family "the best of luck and hope that they will pull through, and I think that at least the youngest ones will succeed".

Ms Kampusch said her own traumatic experience and suffering would stay with her for the rest of her life.

Donation campaign

Earlier Ms Kampusch told Austrian media that she had donated 25,000 euros to Elisabeth Fritzl and her children.

In a statement, she called for a wider donation campaign for the victims. Ms Kampusch added that long-term support for Elisabeth Fritzl, now 42, was vital.

Ms Fritzl was imprisoned and sexually abused by her father in a windowless cellar dungeon for 24 years.

Seven children were born from the abuse, three of whom remained incarcerated with her, never seeing daylight until they were released earlier this week.

Ms Kampusch was forced to live in a tiny basement cell for more than eight years, following her abduction in 1998.

Her 44-year-old captor, Wolfgang Priklopil, killed himself shortly after her escape in August 2006.

Ms Kampusch said she was in close contact with the Fritzl victims' lawyer and the authorities in Lower Austria, where the family live, and was keen to offer help and advice.

Her interview with BBC reporter touch my heart. :tears:

This does stink:

Yet, for an atrocity that has stunned the world, he may wind up serving just 15 years in prison if charged, tried and convicted.

Practically speaking, that may translate into a life sentence for Fritzl, 73. But his case has revived a debate over Europe's lenient penal system — and whether harsher, U.S.-style sentencing guidelines might help deter such heinous crimes.

"Fifteen years for destroying human lives is unacceptable," said Harald Vilimsky, a public safety policy official with Austria's conservative Freedom Party. "Any punishment that falls a single day short of a life sentence is a mockery of the victims."

Does anyone know if there are insitutions for the criminally insane in Europe?
I believe one of the articles said that a) he was convicted of rape, and b) a rape-murder case might be linked to him. It just totally frustrates me that he could get away with a light sentence. You know.....maybe a good idea might be to send this asshole to a Turkish prison.
Maybe this case will help focus attention on the percentage of VERY fucked up sociopaths who REALLY need to be kept away from society forever.
And you know what? I am SO fucking sick of people who whine about prisoners' rights. Yes.......be mild on the majority of prisoners. Most of them are folks who just made a mistake. But someone like this.........I'm sorry, but once you've done something as horrible as this, you automaticly have lost your rights as a human.
