CI's in Children

What made you this angry and defensive? Read between the lines, ask questions, but the way you try to make a point is totally ineffective. Actually, countereffective.

You say "I'm fine with deafness." but the way you write - I don't believe it.

I do understand what LizaMarie is feeling. She is not angry with people with CI but angry at people who think deaf people won't be able to function with themselves in this world. I also get angry at people who are so ignorant about deaf people like they cannot drive a vehicle, cannot scuba dive, doesn't know how to make babies, cannot cannot get a good job, aren't intelligent and so on. I am deaf and I'm proud that I have proven to these ignorant people that deaf people are capable of doing anything that they can do!!

About CIs, I am not against it but I'm against CI people who choose to dump their deaf friends and the deaf world to be with hearing people. I mean why can't they go with both worlds even though they got CI?

I've thought about getting a CI when I was around 20 years old after a doctor pressured on me to get one. I changed my mind right away when the CI specialist told me that I'd have to give up my deep scuba diving because having a CI would be risky if I went deep scuba diving. Why would I choose not to be able to hear over scuba diving? Because I wouldn't be able to enjoy the beautiful underworld that I deeply love! :)

I'm sorry Im rolling on the floor laughing at this one... First of all - you CAN scuba dive even with a CI. My dad has a CI and he scuba dives ALL the time. And I even asked my physician could I scuba dive - he said there is NO LIMIT what I CAN'T do if I have a CI. There is no effect whatsoever at all. And I know other CI users who are also scuba divers. Do the research. :)

Scuba diving yes is indeed a beautiful and wonderful place to be! :)

THEN WHY did the CI specialist in Miami tell me that I have to give up scuba diving?? He even gave me a brochure with what people with CI cannot do and deep scuba diving was one of them. I was pressured into getting a CI and I didn't do a research because I'm not at all interested in getting a CI for myself but I will check into it about the diving part when I have my chance. Perhaps that specialist was wong about it? :dunno:

ButterFlyGirl is correct, Here's the link and quote
For SCUBA divers, the internal implant is validated to withstand pressure at a depth of 25 meters (82 feet) underwater. However, it is recommended that you check with your surgeon or clinician before participating in a dive. There may be other medical conditions that you will need to consider.

Maybe you need to recheck your fact DefLord

I dive to below 82 feet and that's a deep scuba diving.

You're welcome Hun, and welcome back too. I haven't seen you on in a while. Plus I did heard about deep scuba diving was limit in sports activity listed for CI too, You're not the only one. ;)

It says it is VALIDATED to withstand pressure at a depth of 82 feet. But it does set a recommendation that you check with your physician. No where in the paragraph it says you CAN'T - it just says it has been validated up to 82 feet and that you should check with your surgeon/clinician. But we can argue facts and what nots - evidence my father has CI and he scuba dives all the time. Point being is we can argue about all this kind of stuff over and over - and I have spoken to my physicians he said it wouldn't be a problem if I wanted to scuba dive. Technology has improved over time and years and I believe they will continue to do so. :wiggle:

The way I see it - I am not ashamed that I'm deaf. I don't say that I can't succed because I'm deaf. I don't say I can't have a full, happy life because I'm deaf.

BUT

My CI has HELPED ME have a fuller life! I LOVE being able to hear. I love being able to understand speech unaided by lipreading or sign. I love the freedom it gives me, and the confidence I get when interacting with the hearing world. NOBODY is saying that deaf people can't be happy, successful etc - but speaking from experience, having a CI to aid hearing *CAN* make life easier! So what's so wrong about a parent wanting to make life more accomodating and easier for their child?

As to scuba diving...personally, I never have, but if I did, and I had to give up scuba diving so that I could *HEAR*, my equipment would be on sale the next day. I love being able to hear that much that I'd GLADLY give up a recreational sport in order to do so!!!!

Yes we are AWARE that we can't do DEEP scuba diving and we ONLY can do RECREATIONAL scuba diving. in other word YOU are NOT denied from scuba diving at all if it is recreational.

Now, I am assuming that you told your dr "I love deep scuba diving" your dr is right that you have to give THAT (specifically) up. but the dr should have told you still can do recreational scuba diving. go back to your dr and ask for confirmation.

anyway, the dr showed you the brochure to give you the answer... I hope you understood what it said. I agree with deflord. it only validate up to 82 ft. meaning recreation scuba diving is safe and that deep scuba diving should be avoided.

That is YOUR choice and it is MY choice not to have a CI implanted in me, not only just because the Specialist told me that I'd have to give up my deep scuba diving. I just choose to be deaf and why should I have a CI if I'm happy with who I am? I said I'm not against people who chooses to have a CI but I didn't appreciate it when that doctor pressured on me to get one. No one should be pressured to get a CI if they do not want one. I'm happy that you are happy with your CI and I'm happy that I'm happy with my decision not to have a CI even after being pressured.

I have CI.. and i go scuba diving.. however there's a limit of 82 feet deep. i cannot go over 82 feet deep. so there's a limit.. however there's still so much to see from 10 to 70 feet deep. so i take the risk..

and butterflygirl is right.. can't go DEEP again the word DEEP diving.. DEEP means more than 75 feet deep.

I'd be denied of deep scuba diving which I love.

Why should I go back to him again if I don't want to have a CI? That was years ago anyway. He did tell me that I could only dive to a few feet but not deep. I stated that I was a deep scuba diver in my earlier posts.

anyway, the dr showed you the brochure to give you the answer... I hope you understood what it said. I agree with deflord. it only validate up to 82 ft. meaning recreation scuba diving is safe and that deep scuba diving should be avoided.
Yes I understood what the brochure said. I can read perfectly well ;)
Like I said in my earlier post I dive below 82 feet. I dive to 100 to 115 feet. Why I dive that deep? Because I get to see more at that depth and I love it.

Just wanted to let you know that those of us who choose to have a CI are still deaf.

I was once pressurized to have a CI and said "no" at the time and I remember feeling annoyed as well at the pushy audiologist. I was perfectly happy with my hearing aids and functioned well with them. Now that my residual hearing has gone I am very happily in the process for a CI, with a different audiologist mind.

Who knows - maybe one day you might get one because you change or your circumstances change, just like it did for me. There are people on here who never thought they'd ever get one and yet they did.

Don't read this post as pressure on you to get one. It's just an encouragement to leave your mind open to possibilities. Technology changes, life changes...never say never.

Ahhhh, Austrailia, Home of the Nucleus! My daughter has the freedom. Awesome product!

I just choose to be deaf and why should I have a CI if I'm happy with who I am?

I understand what are you saying because I know one can be happy without any hearing, but just for an argument sake let me ask you this:

Why are you assuming that once you are implanted you'll stop being deaf? I assure you, you still will. Except you'll be able to hear things you haven't before, and that may come handy.
I have a daughter who cried once for me when she hurt herself and I couldn't hear her. I know it is not my fault but I felt terrible.
If I had CI then at least I would hear SOMETHING and maybe I could rush to her side when she needed me most..

That is only one tiny example of how a deaf person can benefit from having CI and still be deaf.

Also looks like you are assuming with CI you won't be happy with who you are. You don't know that.. maybe you will be more happy?

I am not saying you should go an get implanted because I think you should (which I really don't) I am just saying one should truly consider all pros and cons that are involved with CI.

Fuzzy

I don't understand why some of you CIers kept on jumping and pressure onto ButterFlyGirl, If she doesn't want CI, then leave her alone! I'm sick and tired of people like you wanna hear and wanna change the world, Well tell you what, You aren't changing my world or anyone else in here who is deaf, Let's stop with the throwing CI down people's throat, we already have bible thumpers here, we sure don't need CIers thumpers here too. Good Grief
