How long does it take to get approved for disability?

    1. No, Bottesini, I didn't attack Foxrac. Suggesting something has a negative connotation doesn't = an attack. 2. TX passed judgment on the originator of the thread ... several times as TX has done in other threads. That finally got my goat and I responded to it. On this forum, we're coming...

Hearing Massage Therapist would like to give relaxation music to deaf clients, ideas?

Hey, Bottesini: Thanks for the name of the massage therapist. Now we need to find her. I'm really curious how she does massage. Being deaf herself gets her there. It's really, really cool that she does this. I agree that "basic" ASL can be learned quickly as in basic signs. I had the...

Hearing Massage Therapist would like to give relaxation music to deaf clients, ideas?

Two things: 1. Masseuse in the massage world has a negative and sexual implication. She's a massage therapist, not a masseuse. 2. Slides of soothing images sounds great to me then hopefully it would lull me to close my eyes. 3. DEAF MASSAGE THERAPIST - where for art thou? 4. Learning ASL...

How long does it take to get approved for disability?

It seems rare that TX and I agree but using the word "normal" is odd to me. Do you mean hearing vs not hearing? In that sense, there are more people who are hearing than not so I suppose you could say hearing is the norm. But your statement does have a negative connotation to it.

How long does it take to get approved for disability?

I think this is still on topic. Where do you "see" the public has the view we're lazy and mooching off the system? Even when I heard as was part of the corporate world, I was not that part of the public to whom you're referring. None of my hearing friends see deaf as leeches. When I landed...

    Hello from UK

Welcome from England. Good luck with the BAHA. I used to envision a bolt sticking out from the mastoid but I understand it's less invasive than that :) and the implant is further up on your head. I looked into it over the years and now my conductive loss (as of 2008) wouldn't benefit from it.

Old question but so am I ? Looking for latent-deaf folks.

Like your husband, I am very literal, text-based, and I like to think of myself as detail-oriented. I can handle change and ASL is vastly different than anything I've used or spoken (English and a little Spanish). I worked in many jobs in the info technology field until my hearing tanked so...

    Welcome and hello.

Hearing Massage Therapist would like to give relaxation music to deaf clients, ideas?

Everything we say here is valid. So, there are many different ways in which to reach out. While we were out walking just now, I envisioned potential clients at ENTs, hearing aid dealers, and audiologist offices. Then ask the folks what would be relaxing. (Some HoH can hear some high...

Hearing Massage Therapist would like to give relaxation music to deaf clients, ideas?

What type of music/sound waves do deaf find relaxing? I understand what you're trying to do and it's fabulous. But it's also a bit funny because you ask, "What type of music/sound waves do deaf find relaxing?" Going from HoH to deaf means music is meaningless to me. My partner just walked by...

How long does it take to get approved for disability?

Few things in response to you and to others in this thread. 1. Why is it that (I'll lump myself into the same boat as you) "We" give deaf people a bad name because we are on SSD? Why are people even saying that - where do you get that information and what's the bad name deaf people are...

How long does it take to get approved for disability?

My hearing loss dropped a lot after a hospital stay some years ago. I didn't think of ssd. Several people asked if I had considered it and I vehemently said, "NO," each time. Then, after months of nothing (where I had rebounded before) I contacted SSD and said I'm not disabled, I just can't...

Old question but so am I ? Looking for latent-deaf folks.

Bottesini and Podiecat Hi, Bottesini: Asheville has a therapy animal system that has evolved over many years. Last year, the org. merged with the major hospital here. So, my request some years ago when we landed here from NY was we go where no one else wants to go. Many people wanted to...

Hello Deaf Friends! I need help with a school project

Nathan: Good luck doing this. You're obviously going to get different perspectives on this. -- Video interpreting experience is none. I use online videos to watch music (signed), learn signing, read interpreters at the rare political or singing event. -- My problem with video interpreting in...

Old question but so am I ? Looking for latent-deaf folks.

Hey, podiecat: I'll give Lifeprint.com a whirl. We're close enough to the same age. Marcus spins his life between helping me (and he does) as a service dog and getting the extra snuggles he needs as a therapy dog. It's rare but kosher. We got our first corgi after visiting Canine...

Old question but so am I ? Looking for latent-deaf folks.

This is much of the problem. To sign, it takes two and for the past 20 years, my partner and I have been using sign that partially combines some of the "pictures" of ASL (versus always using letter qualifiers for the word) and parts of English. I started with,"The Joy of Signing," and moved...

Old question but so am I ? Looking for latent-deaf folks.

The instructor brought about (it's my onus) a bit of shame for not being able to pick up the difficult language of deaf. English is really weird, too, compared with other languages and while I make fun of it, it's what I know. Kudos to those of you who can rapidly sign in ASL. I have to think...

Old question but so am I ? Looking for latent-deaf folks.

Oops, sorry about the misspelling. What do I know. Latent is a new term other people have been using, so I picked it up perhaps erroneously. What I mean is I'm almost 60 and only recently would classify myself as being deaf. Hey hey hey... I used the phrase, "I don't look deaf," for years...

    a medical discovery for deafness

Yup, it's confusing! In my younger years (probably w/a moderate sensori-neural loss only back then), I worked in a dept. w/a co-worker who was deaf. We used to tell her (hearing people, not deaf) when she needed a new battery or when she needed to be fitted for a new earmold. She didn't hear...

    a medical discovery for deafness

I agree about doing risk analysis first and I suppose that's how I ended up not hearing. You're likely going to get those of us who were brought up hearing say we'd get the procedure (depending on the analysis) and those of us who were brought up deaf to not get the procedure. I was brought up...
