How long does it take to get approved for disability?

I think this is still on topic. Where do you "see" the public has the view we're lazy and mooching off the system? Even when I heard as was part of the corporate world, I was not that part of the public to whom you're referring. None of my hearing friends see deaf as leeches. When I landed on SSD, the few friends with whom I interacted said, "Good for you." Frankly, I was embarrassed but followed the rules set by SSA and was applicable. "They" were my friends and knew what I had done in my life.

TX: Sometimes being deaf is sad depending on where you're coming from. As a hearing person and many moons ago, I watched a deaf friend venture out (we worked at a major corporation) and it was scary to me out of my own ignorance - not stupidity. I quickly learned she was fine. I've worked with a deaf people over my career that ended due to my own deafness catching up with me.

I'm the treasurer for our owners association (Excel does not speak back to me, so it's something I can do and contribute) and one of the young men dropped off the bill for maintenance work for the month. I'm not sure how I learned this from him or what made him say it but he is a veteran (young fellow) whose hearing was "shot up" by guns. He is now on SSD and working part-time. I didn't see him as a lazy good for nothin' guy. He seems sweet and very capable of speaking and hearing. But, so what that he's on SSD.

You're not in my shoe (or moccasins), so you can't "speak" or write for me. I vacillate between being okay with being deaf and being petrified. Going from very HoH to deaf FROM living my life hearing illicits very different feelings about the deaf.

AngelEyes1: I'm being redundant :) and it's what I do. You do what you need to. I agree there's a problem when you set, what is perceived as stringent rules, as a way out of work. While I was able to turn down that 24/7 on call job, I knew I'd find another job quickly and did. But that was in a different lifetime, it seems. I'll be the first or second to say that I'm not walking in your moccasins. What some of us in this thread are attempting to do for you is ask you to walk into SSD knowing what you're facing and ask yourself if what you're running from worth it...

Cheers,

You also obviously haven't been deaf long, and are not involved with a lot of deaf people, or you would know this is pretty common.

Lots of people on both sides.

You might possibly like to start out in the late deafened thread before telling all deaf people how we must think and behave...

Where do you see Sheri1000 telling all deaf people how they must think and behave? I can't find it. She speaks of her own experience they way I understand what she has written.

All over the board. I read a great many of her posts that way.

To elaborate, two in this thread of deaf people with her attacks on TxGolfer and Foxrac both.

I was also annoyed with how she complimented Reba on her writing, thus insinuating that deaf people can't write.

It took me 2 years and a good lawyer to fight for my disability.
I am legally deaf without aids, and those dont help all that much.
I have a torn rotator cup in my left arm, a ripped muscle in my right arm, 2 spinal fusion surgeries (2009 and 2011) in which I couldnt drive for 6 months after and still loss 20% movement in my neck, couldnt lift over 3 pounds and still have pain to this day, I have 5 vertibreas messed up in my back along with degenerative disk desease, a bad knee. loss of balance, loss of strength.

Had to hire a lawyer because I was denied and I was still recovering, was terminated from my 15 year career with the government just weeks after surgery (wrongful termination) when I had 1-1/2 years for recovery from the first surgery because it was high risk, then again with the second surgery.

My lawyer said, because alot of people couldnt find work or just didnt want to work, the courst system hired over 300 new judges to weed out the fraud cases. People though, Oh I broke my finger, Ill just get disability... well, thats the reason it is so hard to win the case. My case lasted several hours and you would not believe the people there to fight the case.

A judge, A disability rep, Several doctors and specialists, and so many more...The have stacks and piles of books, They will throw tons of jobs at you with percentages and ratios worldwide from Janitorial to Management and so much higher, the docs will say what you can and cant do per the job discriptions, but they will try to screw you out of disability since they dont want to pay you if they can avoid it. Luckily because of my injuries, lack of experiences and my continuos work history, as well as my medical records showing my injuries/surgeries from childhood on and I kept working, they seen I wasnt there for a handout, that I really was disabled.
Believe me, they will dig deep into your past and pull things that you completely forgot about.

The people saying "good for you".....they would be part of scenario #2

As for the rest, all I can say is pay attention, there are many people out there that think that. Right or wrong

1. No, Bottesini, I didn't attack Foxrac. Suggesting something has a negative connotation doesn't = an attack. 2. TX passed judgment on the originator of the thread ... several times as TX has done in other threads. That finally got my goat and I responded to it.

On this forum, we're coming from different walks of life and different cultures. Our ideas and views may be different and probably will be different from one and other. Many of us watched this collision of cultures caused the hearing President of Gaudette to resign some years ago.

I had a feeling complimenting Reba on her writing would come back and bite me only after pressing "post." That was politically incorrect and I didn't know I had to be politically correct here as others are not.

:ty: This is exactly what I am talking about. The good people for which Disability Insurance was created (like you) are being burdened by people how are trying to take a free ride. That is just sad.

Full disclosure. I am not a fan of the SS system at all. I believe caring for people out of charity would be more efficient. But, since SS is the system we have right now, I believe in fighting to make it the best system that we can. A large part of that is encouraging people not to abuse our current system.

I'm sorry you have had such difficulty.

Passed judgement? Please. It is called adding perspective.

I dont know if many of you pay attention to people who retire, some, if not most pass away within a few years of retiring... because they dont know what to do with themselves ...
When I became disabled, I was irritable, i was restless... it just ate me alive sitting around not able to do anything ( basically due to pain and recovery on my part) but even after I recovered, not 100% yet, I am still restless. I was always in the field of Hard Manual Labor, Supervisory positions... so you can imagine what the family went through with me barking orders like I was directing my work crew of idiots. I still would love to get back into the work force once again if I could get away from the pain I constantly undergo on a daily basis.... it really sucks being disabled, let alone you only get 1/3 or less of what you normally made a month. It really takes a toll on your health and lifestyle. Especially when its a sudden drastic change like my injury has caused me.

From my experience over the years there are lots of deaf who use the ssd system. Lots of them will be living with their common law and have kids and at least one of the couple will be on ssd.
I had often wondered how the deaf managed it. They would have nice cars , travel and party. Me, I was stuck working long hours to pay my way.

I truly am sick of how easy they are. I am working my ass off and my salary is killed by some huge expenses. It is more frustrating for me. I don't do "Woe is me" attitude. Suck it up and deal with it.

Well, AD forum is no research paper or academic paper, so did you get it about what I'm saying - #38?

It isn't worth to argue with him and it is very unreliable.
