Hearing parents of deaf children...take notice!

Jilio and others, I have just started on my Masters in Deaf Education at Texas Women's University and I was already leaning towards research option in this area as part of my degree requirements. My other possible area of interest, besides the perception of the D/HH students themselves, was to...

    Spy Kids 4

It is called "Captiview Closed Captioning" . The link is to a page with a picture and description for the company. I can't give you much of a review of the system itself since I haven't yet had the opportunity to use it when the captions actually worked, but from just seeing the device and the...

    Spy Kids 4

Well, I took the kids to see "Spy Kids" today (it opened today) and it was even worse than I had feared. First, the movie was not released with captions. I realize that 3D movies usually do not have captions, but most are also released in normal projection with captions. We went to a regular...

    X-Post: Interpreting in community theater?

(I posted this first in the "Captioning & Sign Language Interpreting" forum but thought it might get more views over here. Thanks for any insight/advice!) Hello, I am hoping for some insight into a situation I am facing with a children's community theater my children are involved in...

What is attracting people to Austin, TX?

I don't think I have ever heard Austin called "conservative". For Texas, it is super-liberal, and I would say it falls on the liberal end of the spectrum compared to anywhere in the US. Texas has a state tuition waiver for people with a qualifying level of hearing loss good at any state-funded...

    Financial Aid For College?

Texas has a Deaf tuition waiver where a person with a qualifying level of hearing loss can go to any state-funded school and the state will waive tuition and certain fees. I don't know if any other states have anything like that though. I am currently working on my masters in Deaf Education...

    Interpreting in community theater?

Hello, I am hoping for some insight into a situation I am facing with a children's community theater my children are involved in. Background: My two youngest daughters are HOH and are in the play, along with my hearing son. I am late-deafened (happened in my early '30's) - really...

    Spy Kids 4

I also worry that it will promote the myth that hearing aids will "fix" hearing loss, like glasses fix vision problems (how I hate that comparison!). I am glad that they are showing a HH child as a strong main character role, I just have mixed feelings about the other messages it may send.

    Spy Kids 4

That is another point I was trying to make about the movie. Since he has rather large BTE's, it would make sense that the boy would have a more profound loss; however, from the trailer it looks like even his own family does not make the most basic accommodations, like facing him when they are...

    Spy Kids 4

My loss is moderate sloping to profound above 2,000 Hz. I am looking to upgrade to a power aid the same size as the one I have. The girls are moderate to severe.

    Spy Kids 4

Really? If you stop the trailer about 2 seconds in, you can get a good look at the size. The character is 10 YO and the body of the aid is as long as his ear and almost as wide? It looks more like the size of an large CI processor to me. My old aids were probably about half the size of the...

    Spy Kids 4

Spy Kids 4 is scheduled to be released later this summer. I had heard about it last year while in production but I just saw the trailer for the first time online. When the movie was first announced, they made a big deal in the press releases about the boy wearing hearing aids; now, it isn't even...

    The correct way to ...

I usually put the ear hook over my ear first, then insert my ear mold. I dunno why, but it's easier for me to do it that way. When I am putting my daughters' aids in, I do the same thing, hook first, then molds. I didn't know I was doing it backwards, LOL!

    out of curiosity

I didn't start loosing my hearing until my early 30's so I speak like the hearing person I used to be. I hate it when I tell someone that I am hard of hearing and their first response is, "But you speak so well!" Why do they automatically assume a person with hearing loss has to sound a certain...

Embarrasing Moments being a Deaf Person!

A HOH funny moment happened to me last week. I was at our church office during business hours. I was in the receptionist's area and needed some information, but she was talking with one of the minister's administrative assistants about another project, so I was waiting for them to finish before...

Top 10 Reasons for Learning Sign Language

    1. I have progressive hearing loss and very poor speech discrimination. Sign helps me understand when I miss words; I can't wait until I am fluent enough to be able to understand sign alone. 2. I have two daughters with hearing loss and want them to learn sign. 3. Sign gave me back my...

    Hurricane coverage not captioned...

I was watching live continuous coverage of Hurrican Ike late last night and off and on most of the day on DirectTV channel 361, which is KHOU channel 11 out of Houston (I am in the Dallas/Ft. Worht area). There were no captions!! It really bothered me so earlier today I shot off an email through...

I am so prideful of my last daughter!

My now 4 YO potty trained 2 weeks before we were surprised with the news that I was expecting again! I was so celebrating being done with the diaper years when... well, I guess I wasn't as done as I thought. :giggle: That baby just turned 1! I can't wait until we are done with diapers...

Parents of D/HOH children in the North Texas area are invited to an event on November 15th at First Baptist Church, Grapevine, Texas. The event is being sponsored by the Texas Chapter of Hands & Voices (the church is just offering us a place to meet). Program specifics are still being finalized...
