SEE is a language... It's English...

Wow, I was busy and hadn't checked in here for a few days... This is still going! How can a person ignore the definition given in page one or two? SEE is not a language

    ASL meeting groups

No offense to anyone intended. Everyone helps everyone. I was too vague with my answer...at the one I attended it became a basic vocab class with no signed conversations happening. It was not what I wanted or needed.

    ASL meeting groups

Randy and I have gone. I liked it until it turned into a school for newbies who did not want to pay for classes. I had hoped to have conversations and good visits with people, not level one vocab words.

    ASL videos on YouTube

Be careful of YouTube videos, many many videos are not ASL but PSE or :-P SEE or some variation. There are some people who are ASL but most are not.

SEE is a language... It's English...

Wow, tired topic revived. I believe the mis-education of parents regarding SEE comes from well meaning but ill-advised/poorly trained teachers. The schools in my area have MH classrooms where the teachers use SEE. Why? Because when they were in college, dealing with deaf children was a small...

    misdiagnosis of the deaf

Thank you Deafdyke, I almost missed your post trying to wade through the usual arguing :-) . I assumed the St.Rita's comment was for me and my grand-daughter. I believe if she were given a choice she would chose ASL as her first language. She is trying to articulate but also signs as she is...

    misdiagnosis of the deaf

I was not happy with the Children's Hospital in our area. They really did not pinpoint anything. Thank you for the suggestion. I did not know St. Rita's had such a program. I will check into it. I suppose I thought a child had to have a hearing loss diagnosis to attend St. Rita's The...

    misdiagnosis of the deaf

I believe she is HOH. I am not sure what the level might be. She is very bright but gets very frustrated with everyone and everything because no one understands the sounds she creates. It is better but the way she enunciates, I believe is a huge clue that is being missed. When she seemed to...

    misdiagnosis of the deaf

I still believe this misdiagnosis has happened to my 3 year old grand-daughter and I do not seem to be able to make anyone listen. She has been accepted to a pre-school program for developmentally delayed children. It is primarily oral although the teacher does sign. She does not speak, we...

US to spend $200 million a day on Obama's Mumbai visit

I know everything the Obama's do is pricey but the stories are ridiculous. Fact find first, then post. I do find it contradictory that people screamed foul when Bush would take a few days working vacation on his ranch in Crawford...but...costly trip after costly trip by Barak and Michele seem...

Why do you want to be a interpreter?

So interesting Reba. I loved your life story regarding ASL and Interpreting. ;-D I have not decided about ITP yet. I am being encouraged to go for it on the Legal Terp end since that is the area from which I am retiring. I do not know if I want to give up the easier existence of being SSP...

    Letter: Don't use term 'hearing-impaired'

I understand both sides of the argument regarding words. A word or words can set a tone or imply a positive or negative affecting how people act and react to you. But, in order to get help with the cost of HAs through BVR we had to go to a seminar given by an audist organization. We went, and...

Is being deaf a disability or not?

This topic keeps coming back up. I think people (hearing, deaf, etc) have a hard time with understanding. One poster said " a fine line between disability and discrimination" , two different things if you are defining. Many have confusion with "D/deaf Power" "Not disabled" "Don't treat me...
