    Deaf Community vs. ASL students

I truly understand deafies feeling it's rude for hearies to drop signs and start talking it is like going to the nail salon and all the vietamese talking on and on in their language. How do i know they aren't talking about me? But on the other hand, let me assure you that most who are learning...

    Deaf culture - do's and don'ts, etc. Let's make a list!

I have an unbelievably sharp sense of smell too. One time a man who wore this wonderful cologne hugged me and the next morning eventhough I had changed into bedclothes I could still smell the cologne. The hug was very very brief friendly hug. Unfortunately, I can smell things that I surely wish...

is it hard to lean asl?

lifeprint.com and aslpro.com ASL is a complex beautiful language but if you have a knack for learning languages and you are more visual than aural then yes, asl is relatively easy to learn but it is still a language that takes years to be fluent in but within a few months you will be able to...

    how much should I charge?

I work at a hospital in admissions, and a volunteer in her 60's asked me to teach her and her hh husband sign language. He wears hearing aids and both are very active in the hearing community. They merely want to learn to communicate easier and think learning it now is a good time. I was...

    Deaf culture - do's and don'ts, etc. Let's make a list!

In the hearing world we SAY "you" pointing at a person is rude simply because in english we don't have indexing or pronominalization. When a hearing person points and says you it looks like they are threatening the person. In ASL it is an indicator of who you are speaking to and is necessary.

    Children Of Deaf Adults!

Yes it's imperative to know the cultures you will be dealing with because everyone has their own and the rules in each culture are not universal. So what may be ok to say in one isn't necessarily ok to say in another and you have to be discerning in this regard and still be faithful to the...

    Receptive abilities!!

I totally disagree. First of all deaf try hard to speak english and when they fail at the grammar it's just messed up english not asl or pse. Their minds think in sign not words they don't asl gloss like we can do. Those who are deaf and don't have the english skills mastered, just type wrong...

    tinnitus theory?

I get intermitten tinnitus in both ears it doesn't really bother me as it is like taking a hearing test I hear a high pitched ring but not real loud. I have mild hearing loss. It is hard to hear conversations going on around me but high pitched sounds like whistling oh that is too loud and...

    Translate into ASL from English

--Happy that you like english, but if you are deaf or hoh especially before age 5, it would seem asl would make sense due to the fact it is a visual language which is how the deaf perceive things, visually. If you are late deafened after 5 and you learned english first and mce, then I can see...

    Differences between SEE/PSE/ASL

What would you think of this: Hola. Como are you?this is known as spanglish. It's not english, it,s not spanish It's not a native tongue. Same SEE and SE and PSE. It is contact signing used to bridge the communication gap between two different languages. I think if you really took the time to...

    The Whiners are Killing us

Pek 1: You say some deaf write like they are signing. Actually that is not true or I would understand them. They do try to write english but are inept at it. Our language is very hard to learn for foreigners let alone deaf who cant hear the language. Here is an example of asl gloss which if the...

    The Whiners are Killing us

Here's a novel idea. why don't they make a deaf channel like they have a spanish channel? With asl at the helm. And they could make it like a pbs station where charity pays for the channel or advertisers could pay for it. Afterall asl is the number 4 language in the country or is it third now?

    Deaf Children and Signing

these oralist need to be deaf and try to learn french or czechoslavakian or something and see how easy it is to learn. Kudos to deaf who somehow manage to learn english and speak it and lipread cause I cannot imagine being able to do that myself if I were deaf. Sign language is so beautiful to...
