Deforestation: Problems

You are mistaken. This artificial biosphere is for Earth too in case it has become too inhospitable to live outside naturally. We've already are living in "biosphere" of all kinds in some sense.

It's not a wishful thinking. It's totally doable and sadly enough - too many people are just too ignorant about our looming environmental disaster.

That's being incomplete not mistaken, the purpose was also space colonization.

And, yes, it's doable if the people living inside don't continue to mate. The whole problem, as others have pointed out, is population. You can build the perfect bottle, but once the bottle gets full you can't put anything else in it.

There is nothing wrong with biosphere, but it's not a solution so much as a test. The goal is to learn from it and apply it to the real world.

Self sustaining in this case if for power, and astronaut air, not a complete biome.

I'll argue your definition of biosphere...

An artificial biosphere is a self sustaining ecological closed artificial environment.

otherwise an airplane pressurized cabin is a 'biosphere' to you... and the inside of a sub... etc etc...

Right. And without the "artificial" in front of it, it refers to the zone of life on earth.

if you live in underwater biosphere, it's pressurized as well. if you live in Mars/Moon biosphere, it's pressurized as well.

Air pressurization is not a criteria that disqualify the term "artificial biosphere".

As I stated in my previous post -

We have not reached a stage where we can build a completely self-sustaining artificial biosphere. I hope that people will soon realize that it's just much cheaper and simpler to take care of our natural biosphere than artificial biosphere.

...

I was illustrating by your definition a pressurized, sealed, cabin of any kind meets your criteria...
a self-sustaining and closed artificial environment.

I was illustrating that by my definition that ISS is not a biosphere.
An artificial biosphere is a self sustaining ecological closed artificial environment.

Here's an official definition for Biosphere:

Concise Oxford English Dictionary © 2008 Oxford University Press:
biosphere/ˈbʌɪəʊsfɪə(r)/
▶noun

1 the regions of the surface and atmosphere of the earth occupied by living organisms.

2 an artificial structure enclosing a self-contained ecosystem.

:hmm:

ISS a biosphere?? Lol.....

Dude, we still have to take food up there to replenish!

You are thinking of immediate life support only.

A freaking biosphere? Good Lord.
Why not bubble people bouncing around?

While I've come to realize things in the ON-TOPIC forum never are... what's the point of this statement?

Never mind. I didn't read this thread from the beginning, so once again I made an ass of myself.

right - they drink their own piss and they breathe what they exhaled but point is - it's self-sustained in a way but nothing is ever a complete artificial biosphere anyway since they can't eat what they shit  it's just more proof that artificial biosphere is not feasible nor practical. i hope it serves as a dire warning for us that we need to seriously take care of our natural biosphere or we're gonna have a big problem

Jiro, I do apologize. I was mistaken in my choice of word I was incomplete and wrong.

apology's not needed :)

I only care about all of us coming to same page and of course there will be some disagreements along the way.

A fully enclosed artificial biosphere is most definately a completely artificial biosphere. It is the enclosure that makes it an artificial environment, jiro. Our natural biosphere ends at the zone of life.

ok and? I fail to see any of your points in here. Perhaps it's outside your field? :dunno:

didn't you read from his link that it failed?

It's (the ISS) not a Biosphere in the way that 'artificial biosphere' is used- there is no ecosystem... just CO^2 scrubbers, and O^2 pumps... water filtration and sun lamps... there is no attempt to replicate a food chain or natural process much less a food web...

We can have a self-sufficient biosphere, the problem is the inhabitants go crazy...(not permanently) and it takes a huge are for a few people...

Well the people going slightly nuts was no good- the size issue and the way the dome is causes... nevermind- what ran out was the understanding of how much space would be required, Biosphere 2 was one of three total ever tried... new field and all... they ran out of money not the willingness to try.

but... it talks about artificial biosphere... not earth...

You can have an artificial biosphere on earth, jiro. The zone of life of the Earth is just a form of natural biosphere. And we were originally talking about natural biosphere since we were discussing the environmental effects of deforestation and the way that impacts other life forms in this biosphere.

Did you? You are the one that said an artificial biosphere was not totally artificial. I was just correcting that it is artificial..:dunno2:

And you are the one that started this ridiculous trend by asking if I had ever seen "livestocks in a biosphere." To which I replied that the the zone of life of earth was a biosphere, so "yes" I had seen livetock in a biosphere.

Tell me something new.

Lol what? Wow..... You are so confused. First, you said natural and now artificial? Mind-boggling. And also I have absolutely no idea what you said about an artificial biosphere not being totally artificial. That doesn't even make any sense and I've never said such thing.

Can we not turn into another trivial bickering? I'm not interested in correcting your posts anymore. You say what you want and I'll say mine along with my college degree behind this related subject - you know... The arable land. Semi arid soil. Fertile Crescent. Desertificiation. All these boring stuff.
