Is oral deaf education really a threat?

as for oral advocates "talking badly" about ASL, i have never experienced that. Not a single oral school (in my experience) has said that ASL is bad or that they forbid signing. They have all included asl in language testing assessments as well as saying that asl is useful and that many kids and families use it. BUT on the other side, i HAVE had many ASL advocates say that my child is suffering because of spoken language, that she will never succeed because of spoken language, that spoken language will leave her will cognitive issues, that spoken language will cause her to have learning deficits.....who is being ugly here? Who is trying to play on fear?

CID is shady in this regard. They only do this in front of parents. When the parents are not present, damn.

I know people who have been there. They know what they saw. One even met the president. According to this person, he refused to shake hands simply because he assumed that the person was not able to speak.

In the mid 80's I was hired by someone at CID who was working on his doctorate about lipreading. He read aloud from Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" series and he used various volumes of sound through my headphones to see if they made any difference in my comprehension of his speech. I went through this for about six months, and I was but one of several subjects.
I also had several friends who attended CID and their stories had the similar theme of hiding their signing out of sight of teachers, and a couple of them remarked that they still smell urine while signing today because they would sign in the bathroom. Things like that. Mind you, I haven't visited CID lately, and I have no idea if they allow signing there today, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't.
 
The yelling at Clarke, the slapping at T.M....

Just a bit of an example, and the amazing thing: They are recent.

faire jour is GROSSLY underestimating the power of words in the deaf community.

I don't believe they allow any of it according to someone I know. At least that was the case a few years ago.

Not surprising. I have always known they lie to parents at intake. They make a show of signing, then once the student is in, it all stops.

they don't use sign but they certainly have students who do.

That's right, it's all an act. They don't tolerate any of it on the campus.

I personally have stepped in three deaf schools (1 oral and 2 residential) and I can safely say that I definitely prefer being mainstreamed over going to any one of these 3 schools. However, I don't know if that's the case for every single deaf school out there.

Isn't the point that you are happy where you are? Not "Oh man, I could have had been happier if I went there.". The grass is always greener on the other side.

Do you guys honestly think that whatever school you went, that was the best school for you, even if you were a happy camper? It isn't realistic, probably less than 1% chance. What matters the most is you are generally happy and developing with at least an appropriate amount of progress.
 
One of oral schools I went to banned signing, you are just not allowed to and when parents come they suddenly allow signing.

Other oral school I know used to be like that from my friend but last few years they have changed because more and more signing kids come and they can't ban it anymore. (Post 16, 6th Form)

Yep, just left shaking my head in disbelief at the self centeredness and the inability to put the parents wants aside and tend to the child's needs.
