Definition of "book learning"

Jillio... as much as I hate to say it. He's been saying the truth.
I'm staring at his letter.

you pretty sure it's not doctored up? :giggle:

photoshop. amazing tool it is. :hmm:

You are all right about the "defending master's thesis" thing.

In many cases, one does not defend a master's thesis, but rather takes a grueling written exam that lasts 4 hours. Depends on the program and the university. In the humanities, most people who are planning to move up to a PhD. usually opt for the exam, since it doesn't require an extra year to write the thesis. Either way, an "oral defense" of a Master's thesis is much different from a defense of a PhD dissertation. The "oral defense" lasts an hour or so and they usually just pat you on the back and send you on your way. The PhD defense is a long process that requires many rewrites and serious examination. The prospect of losing your defense is very real in a PhD program.

Exactly. Presentation of a Master's Thesis is simply an oral presentation of your topic. Defense of a Ph.D. dissertation is the line between being granted your doctorate or not getting your doctorate. Your entire degree and several years of your life is dependent upon a successful defense in front of a few Ph.D's in your field.

Photo shopped? I'd have to see it. There is a reason he insisted on sending it to you privately, and it can't be his real name. Most everyone here knows that already. And why would one keep a 10 year old acceptance letter when they turned down the program?

That was not Iowa City was it? I think that happened with one of their higher ups in the last couple of years.

Nah, it was U of Nebraska. Yeah right, the program at Iowa is the best in the country. They wouldn't take a slacker like me :D

I can check to see if it's doctored up. I'm a photoshop guru, and looking at this, looking at how the ink transferred from one side to the other, etc, it is real.

Nope. If posts from hell wants to verify even further, there's a phone number and email address to contact the professor.

I already have that information. Remember, you gave us her name. Easy enough to access the rest.

And, you do realize don't you, that they cannot release your records? Of course you do. That is why you were so willing to provide a phone number and email addy.:cool2:

Go ahead. You didn't want to bet. You don't get to see it.

I'm not lying about the letter. Nor is it doctored. In fact, I'm proud of that letter though I had to turn it down for a bigger opportunity. All in all, I got the competive GRA deal to go along with the PhD.

Don't cry, Bott. Back to the book discussion.

I just received Septimus Heap, Syren in the mail. It is a ripoff of Harry Potter, by Angie Sage, who irritatingly misspells words in a cute way, to make them her own, and an important feature of the books.

For some reason I have bought every one of them even though I approach apoplexy every time I read one. :hmm:

Yeah, you got a letter signed by an undergrad prof admitting you to a Ph.D. program.:cool2:

A bigger opportunity? What? Patroling state parks?

I can understand why! The misspellings would drive me nuts! They must be entertaining or you wouldn't continue to buy and read them.
