Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy model whose flamboyant made-for-reality-TV life featured paternity and inheritence battles, drug and weight struggles, and her son's mysterious death, died Thursday in Florida. She was 39.

Smith was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital after being found unresponsive in her hotel room at the nearby Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, where she was staying with her companion, Howard K. Stern.

"At 2:49 this afternoon we were advised by hospital personnel that Anna Nicole Smith died," Seminole, Fla., police Chief Charlie Tiger told reporters. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family." (Click here for CNN video of the police press conference.)

An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death. Smith's bodyguard attempted CPR before she was taken to the hospital, police said. Also, a nurse was in Smith's room who made the call for help. It was not known why the nurse was there.

The tumult surrounding Smith's life now intensifies in death. (For more on Anna Nicole's life, click here.) Plunged into turmoil are efforts to determine her baby daughter's paternity and the question of who will inherit her late husband's estate, estimated at more than $1 billion.

Smith died five months after her 20-year-old son, Daniel, died in his mother's Bahamas hospital room. Daniel's death came just three days after Smith gave birth to daughter Dannielynn Hope.

"I'm just so sorry for her because I know she's been in heavy depression over the loss of Daniel and nobody should have to endure what she's endured," Smith's lawyer Ron Rale said Thursday. "She was a loving mother. I hope Anna is reunited with Daniel. To leave Danielynn in this world is just the most sorrowful thing I can think of."

Dannielynn was not with her mother and Stern at the hotel, sources say, but was being cared for in the Bahamas by the mother of Shane Gibson, a high-ranking Bahamian official who is a close friend of Smith's.

Stern, with whom she exchanged vows in a commitment ceremony on Sept. 28, "is just devastated," Rale says. "He can't speak."

Before learning of Smith's death, Rale told PEOPLE, "She hasn't been well the past few days, she's had cold and flu symptoms."

On Wednesday, a Los Angeles judge had ordered Smith and Dannielynn to submit to a DNA test by Feb. 21. The test is tied to a paternity lawsuit filed by photographer Larry Birkhead, who claims he is Dannielynn's father. Smith's companion, Howard K. Stern, is listed as the infant's father on her birth certificate.

After the news of Smith's death, an emergency hearing was scheduled to occur in Los Angeles on Friday regarding the paternity of Dannielynn, PEOPLE reports. Birkhead's attorney, Deborah Opri, wants to take a DNA swab from Smith's corpse, which Rale calls "the lowest form of behavior I've ever heard of."

Smith had been enjoying a vacation weekend at the Hard Rock Hotel. According to Julianne Carelli, the public relations and advertising manager at the hotel, Smith checked in on Monday night and was due to check out Friday.

Carelli says Smith was a "frequent guest," celebrating her last birthday at the hotel and filming a TrimSpa video there.

"We're shocked," Kathleen Hart, who is married to Donald Hart, Smith's stepfather "during her growing-up years," tells PEOPLE. "We're just in shock. On the heels of Danny's death, it is hard to deal with."

And Playboy founder Hugh Hefner said in a statement to CNN: "I'm very saddened to learn about Anna Nicole's passing. She was a dear friend who meant a great deal to the Playboy family and to me personally. My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and loved ones during this difficult time." Smith was a Playboy Pet of the Month in 1992 and a year later was the magazine's Playmate of the Year.

Smith also rose to fame modeling for Guess jeans. "This is a very tragic and sad day," the company's CEO, Paul Marciano, said in a statement. "Personally I feel she did not recover from the loss of her son Daniel who was the love of her life." And in an interview with CNN, he said "she had something magic."

Oh no!!! feel so sad after I learned about her death. Surely miss her specially her wildness.

Wait a minute, I feel deja vu. her death remind me of Marilyn Monroe.

That's what the media said. That her life kinda mirrors Monroe's life.

She is likely next Marylin Monroe.

My thoughts and symphaty go out to all her family and loved ones. R.I.P

That's so sad to see someone go at young age. :( RIP Anna Nicole Smith! :sadwave:

yes, it's her. And autopsy will tell tomorrow, Feb 9 what causes her collapsing.

And she missed to find out who is the father of her daughter Danielynn Hope Smith, was appointed to find out this Feb 21.

I was shocked when I first heard. I suppose, in hindsight, it shouldn't have come as any surprise after all she was devoted to her son. But I feel quite sorry for her daughter who will grow up never knowing her mother and her brother. I hope the custody suit will be resolved and that she'll have a loving and a stable life ahead.

I hope they'll find the cause of her death to stop all the conspiracy theories from floating around.

My condolences to her family. RIP Anna.

Anna Nicole Smith lived in glare of tabloids
Anna Nicole Smith lived in glare of tabloids - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - From her first Playboy centerfold and marriage to an 89-year-old oil tycoon to the mysterious death of her adult son, Anna Nicole Smith lived her life in a special corner of America -- the often garish world of supermarket tabloids.

Few figures in modern pop culture have garnered as much publicity as the buxom, blond Texas native, whom the media alternately painted as a bubble-headed naif and a cynical gold-digger with the soul of an adding machine.

Smith, 39, still enmeshed in disputes over the paternity of her 5-month-old daughter and the circumstances of her son's death in the Bahamian hospital where she had just given birth in September, died on Thursday in Florida.

Her sudden death bore an eerie parallel to the demise of Smith's personal idol, screen legend Marilyn Monroe, who died in 1962 at age 36. Like Monroe, Smith rose from a troubled background to gain worldwide fame as a sex symbol.

Born Vicki Lynn Hogan in Texas and abandoned by her father, she dropped out of high school and ended up working in a fried-chicken joint.

She married her first husband, Billy Wayne Smith, at age 17, had a child by him and was divorced two years later, moving to Houston where she began working in a topless bar.

It was as a stripper that she met elderly oil billionaire J. Howard Marshall. She was 26 when they married; he was 89.

By then, Smith's popularity had exploded as she became Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Year and began modeling for the fashion line Guess? She also made her film debut in the big-screen spoof "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult."

Marshall died 14 months after they married, and Smith spent much of the following decade battling members of his family over his estate. In May 2006 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Smith could pursue her case in federal court.

In the intervening years, the tabloids chronicled Smith's wildly fluctuating weight. A somewhat bloated Smith hit cable television in 2002 with her own reality series, "The Anna Nicole Smith Show."

As the series drew to a close in 2004, Smith landed a new role as spokeswoman for the diet supplement TrimSpa and dropped much of her excess weight.

But her renewed fame turned to tragedy in September of last year when her son, Daniel, then 20, died in the Bahamas three days after Smith gave birth to her infant daughter. An inquest into his death has been set for March 27.

Smith then became embroiled in a paternity suit over the infant girl with ex-boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, who claimed to be the child's father. Smith insisted that her lawyer and husband, Howard K. Stern, was the girl's father.

Those battles and the legal dispute over her share of Marshall's fortune will presumably go on without her, and perhaps provide more fodder to the tabloids.

Former Playmate Smith dies at 39
BBC NEWS | Americas | Former Playmate Smith dies at 39

The flamboyant former model Anna Nicole Smith has died near Miami, Florida at the age of 39, her lawyer has said.

Smith, a former Playboy bunny, married Texas oil billionaire J Howard Marshall II in 1994 when she was 26 and he was 89. He died a year later.

She spent years in court fighting his son for a share of his estate, and won a victory at the Supreme Court in 2006.

She was found unconscious in a hotel room and could not be resuscitated. No cause of death has been announced.

US media have reported that an autopsy will be conducted on Friday.

One of Smith's lawyers told Reuters news agency her husband Howard K Stern was "speechless and grieving".

Family tragedy

Her son Daniel, the product of a short-lived youthful marriage, died at the age of 20 in September, just days after Smith's daughter was born.

The baby girl is the subject of a paternity suit, with Smith's former boyfriend Larry Birkhead saying he is the father of the child.

He sued Smith in Oct 2006, shortly after the baby was born.

Smith said Mr Stern, who is also her lawyer, was the father of the child.

A former topless dancer, Smith modelled for Guess Jeans and Playboy before marrying Marshall.

She also appeared in films including one of the Naked Gun movies.

She had her own reality TV show, The Anna Nicole Smith show, from 2002 to 2004.

Smith was born Vicki Lynn Hogan in Mexia, Texas, on 28 Nov 1967.

Anna Nicole Smith dead
The Sun Online - News: Anna Nicole Smith dead

ANNA Nicole Smith has been confirmed dead of a suspected drugs overdose.
She was rushed to hospital after collapsing at a hotel suite in Hollywood, Florida.

The former Playboy model, 39, was "not breathing and unresponsive" when paramedics arrived at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, where she was staying with her lawyer boyfriend Howard K. Stern.

It was confirmed she was dead at around 8.40pm (UK time).

She was 26 when she married 89-year-old wheelchair-bound oil tycoon J Howard Marshall II in 1994.

When they met two years earlier, she was working as a topless dancer in a club in Houston, Texas.

Marshall's death 14 months later triggered a legal battle between Nicole Smith and Marshall's son Pierce, who died unexpectedly earlier this year, aged 68.

Legal experts say Nicole Smith, who has not received any money from her late husband's estate since his death in 1995, was looking to be the likely winner of the bitter battle over his fortune.

In September last year, Nicole Smith's son Daniel, 20, was found dead in the Bahamas hospital where she had given birth to daughter Dannielynn Hope just three days earlier.

The former model was due to give evidence at the inquest into his mysterious death from a drugs overdose.
