I personally don't see what the benefits are that in any way outweigh the natural tendency for humans to compare, feel inadequate, and be jealous or angry. Where it gets sticky is whether I then feel that my opinion on the situation should be law. I'm not as sure about that. I googled around...

I fell for it, probably one of the most effective videos for explaining the issues it raises. Worth watching even if you feel uncomfortable the message is so important.

Respecting a deaf person is as simple as seeing them as a person. Initially, it may be awkward to communicate, but trying and working with people is way better than dismissing them. After all, you wouldn't want people to, after meeting you, treat you like you are a child, pity you, or...

If there is a Dean of Student Development or more generally just the Dean of Students, it might be good to at least talk to them about it and file some sort of report on the issue.
