Yet I learned the game as a 10 year old with a family income of $160/week and no public assistance and growing up in one of the worst areas in Houston.
I learned thanks in large part to generous contributions from rich white guys...Namely Doug Sanders and Duke Butler. They set up the HGA and provided "scholarships" for the poor and minorities. Even got tour pros to pay for our clubs.....mine were purchased by Hubert Green. (Doug Sanders is the older guy in the links first pic) The kids in the pic were childhood friends/opponents. Mayfair was rich but Hendley wasn't. Hendley might have been the greatest Junior golfer of all time (including Tiger) but the Cancer was a real set back. Marcus Jones, a car dealer in Houston, sponsored many of us as well.
Today I still contribute to the HGA and AJGA as well as host a fundraiser and volunteer at the local event. Just to continue the spirit of helping minorities learn to play golf. Tiger was one of the minorities that benefited from the AJGA program....
