I thought I would give everyone an update on my ASL class. So far we have had 3 quizzes and I have made 100% on each of them. We had to write a script put it in ASL gloss and sign it. I received an “excellent” on my ASL sentence structure which was great because it was my first time ever putting things in ASL form, I sign in PSE. Thanks everyone here in AD for looking over the script and giving their insight. I received a 100% over all on the script and performance. We received the midterm back last night and I received a 100% on that. I missed a few questions, they were stupid mistakes though. I looked over the questions I got wrong and thought; why in the hell did I put that answer?!?! But I did the bonus question and got it right. That put me back at 100%. It was a 2 part question. Explain “pah” and what is DPN. She wrote on my paper that I was the only person in all of her 6 classes to get both parts correct!! That made me feel good. =)
Next we are moving into more fingerspelling which y’all know I hate! My days of 100% on the quizzes and tests might be over. But this means I have to practice more. ANYWAY there is my update!!

That is wonderful to hear.. Keep up with your practicing on ASL.. and you will do FINE! :)

GREAT job! :)

That's great, dude! Keep it up! :thumb:

Congrats! :thumb: Forgive me but I dont remember why you re taking ASL class? Are you trying to be certificated interpreter ?

Southern, that is great you did good at exams! What are you majoring in?

Well my initial intent was to just be better at ASL. There is so much I don’t know. I hate mediocrity and if I am going to do something I want to be good. Also I have a lot of Deaf friends and my best friend is Deaf I want to communicate just as easily as I do with my hearing friends. So that is why I signed up for the classes. But many of my Deaf friends encouraged me to become an interpreter. They were so vocal about it I decided after really thinking about it that I would become one. I asked why they thought I should become one and they said they felt comfortable with me from first meeting me, (such as voicing which a lot of Deaf I have met don’t do when they are around a hearing they don’t know), and to have a terp like that would be great for other Deafies. And because it is so needed. I enjoy ASL and being with Deaf people in general although I know I have great friends and that has something to do with it. I haven’t found a job yet that I truly completely enjoy. Maybe this will be one.

My major is Interpreting for the Deaf. Although a deaf friend said that I might want to consider teaching. I love history, other cultures, and different languages. Teaching ASL you have to teach all of those things. Another suggested counselor for Deaf children and families. I want to get this under my belt first.

I am also in a class. I am really happy for you! They really asked you what pah meant on the test. Wow! What answer did you give, "finally"?

"PAH" is a mouth morpheme used in cojuction with the sign "finally". pah alone does not mean finally. I think that is where some people made the mistake.

*patting on back* Good job Southern! Keep it up. Since u said u are very expressive, I think u will do fine with your ASL. :)

Congratulations !! And betcha you're doing a good Job , I know you can do it! ;)

As an ASL tutor, I can't tell you how many times I feel discouraged from time to time when students don't get it about Deaf culture. However, on the plus side, there are too students that make you feel that it's worthwhile teaching, and you are an exemplary model for that. You go out socialising with deaf mates and try your best to learn what you need to. Congratulations, and I wish you much succeed on what seems to be a great start for your studies.

Well i had the Deaf friends before going to class. And i have an advantage over the other students in that regards. The Deaf events we are required to go to i had already been to several before ever registering for classes. Funny, some of the students were like, "wow you know Deaf people?" like i know Hallie Berry or something. Like Deaf people are this mysterious people or something. I laughed inside when people did that, eyes all big. LOL
But thanks Kuifje i do try hard and i realize these are people this isn't just a class to me. These are my friends, people i spend a lot of time with. People i enjoy being with. That is a big motivator!!!

YaY YaY I knew you would do just fine in that class. YOU do ROCK! I am very proud of you!
LoL I think its so funny that part your hearing friends would go wow you know deafies like they are celebrities. So it means I am a celebrity too? ;)
