Woman Shoots Self To Get Health Care

And remember, this is her claim.....doesn't mean it happened. She did apply for disability and medicare earlier though :hmm:

what was the status on it?

Yeah I see too much of this kinda crap. My friends father-in-law has been on disability for years......says his back won't let him stand up to do his old job at a Lockheed plant. Yet he plays Tennis almost every day......seriously. And he is good too.

simple. report him for fraud. that's what jail is for.

Oh they know.....The claim is he only plays for an hour. Dr says it is good for him.....but standing at a machine for 8 hrs would be too painful....

enough help? she didn't get much of help. what she got was a substandard level of medical care. it's a shame especially in this wealthy nation and especially that our prisoners get more medical attention than her.
Since we don't know exactly what's wrong with her shoulder, and we don't know exactly what treatment she got, then we don't know if it was substandard or not. We have only her statement about what happened.

if it ain't fixed, it ain't treated.
People sometimes receive the best treatment and still don't get "fixed." There are some injuries or conditions that can't be "fixed."

I've been sent to the best private specialist for my chronic hives, had every test available, and have been given every medication possible, and yet, after more than two years, my problem hasn't been "fixed." The doctors say it will never be fixed.

There are many insured people everywhere who get excellent medical treatment and yet their health problems don't get "fixed."

There have been many instances where people have a disease or injury, and there is nothing more the doctors can do. Even after time, the pain killers don't help....so they resort to killing themselves, not being able to deal with the pain. Does that mean they are crazy?.

I've had several ear(s) surgeries, and still have to deal with the pain. Doctors say no more surgery for me, and the pain will worsen over time, I've read about other people having the same problem and OD'ing because of it.

What's a person to do if they can't get any help?....Some take desperate measures! This lady did. I'm not saying it was the "right" thing to do, but someone that will actually shoot themselves because they are in pain and the doctors won't or can't do anything for them, need help.

you don't know that. could be micro-fracture. could be this. could be that. that's why we have to rule it out.

if it ain't fixed, it ain't treated.

She did say that the pain is still there after she shot herself and wished she pointed the gun a little lower, but I don't think they found anything... they would check for surrounding wound for fragments and they would see it. But they don't.

An interesting viewpoint:

ER Resident Physician June 14th, 2010 7:38 am ET

Hearing stories like this is very disconcerting. As a physician, ER care is routinely required by law to be given to patients without insurance. We do it all the time. For extremity injuries, particularly of the shoulder, there is no indication for an MRI or CT scan. Gunshot wounds to an extremity 9x out of 10 do not require a CT scan, or MR, only an X-ray, which she received. Certainly this woman has some kind of mental pathology where she believes that she can demand specialized care when it is unnecessary. Patients like this with no insurance who intentionally harm themselves are the reason your health care is so expensive.

It is inflammatory articles like this that truly undermine the health care debate. Often times such patients such as the ones described above believe that "fixing the problem" involves not only cleaning and bandaging the wound (which was undoubtedly done in her case) and providing some pain relief& antibiotics, but also prescribing narcotics. These are what are termed in medicine "drug seeking patients" If this isn't done, many patients get belligerent, and try to "increase" the original problem so they do get more attention. in I applaud the physician who didnt perform a CT scan or MRI in her case- he was complying with medical standard of care.
