With the Christmas holiday coming up...families will purchase a 'pet' for a Christmas gift for their child(ren). Is it wise to get a 'pet' only during Christmas when I hear many stories of people getting a pet for Christmas and then once Christmas is over, the care, having the respondsibilities slack or go unheeded which may attribute to several pets being discouraged or depressed? Although, there are families that will continue being supportive with the proper care a pet will need, yet, statistically, the numbers have risen when pets are being purchased during the Christmas holiday...how do you view on this?

I prefer that a dog be purchased at any time except for birthdays and Christmases. Just my honest opinion since it's the better way of teaching a child on how to be more responsible.

I know what you mean. I agree with you. People get carried away with pets because it looks nice at the moment. However, on a long run... things get in the way and they end up in animal shelters later. This issue applies to whenever they show 101 Dalmations in the theaters. When the movie was released, there was an increase in sales of dalmations. A few months later, there was an increase in dalmations being homeless. It was because people didn't realize that dalmations are not exactly "great" house dogs and the "cuteness" only lasts a few months before they're fully grown.

*sigh*

I have noticed that some parents tend to buy a cute puppy, kitten or etc for their children at Christmas, then a few months went by, they no longer take care of them, they would either throw them outside and chain them up on some kind of object or tree , given them up by dumping them on the side of the road or dumping them at the animal shelter...I'm soo tired of seeing some people buying pets for their children or for themselves and they no longer take care of them once the pet grows a bit bigger....

How could someone like that could do that to an innocent pet? I know I can't...

I think that parents should not buy pets for their children at Christmas unless they are going to be the one taking care of them..Parents shouldn't expect their children taking care of the pet themselves...

If you buy the pet, then you take care of it!!!!...

It's the same in Australia -- a surge of buying pets like dogs or cats over Christmas then are abandoned by the New Year. The government has been trying to encourage people NOT to purchase a pet as a gift for Christmas as they don't want an influx of homeless and abandoned animals crowding up the local RSPCA.
