wireless router
pro
• ideal for anyone who own laptop, get freedom anywhere around up to 95 meters
• Less wire, save cost on spend ethernet
• more "port" for computer to sharing
con
• able break any type of secure

wired router
pro
• speed network sharing computer
• highly secure
con
• not great for laptop
• annoying wire around in building
• limited port

be honestly, I don't think that wireless security will be break that often. It's probably 1% or never happen in your life.

and for speed network if use internet, it's pointless because ISP at home cannot go beyond than 2.5MB/sec.

I love wireless. I can go anywhere around in house or apt.

For me, I like wireless and wired in both but I rather to use wired in anyway but need add both on pol list.

Wireless network is good for families with multi-computers and require to put wpa2 then wouldn't worried about get hacked. I had set on wpa2 for entire of my family then looks a lot better than before but I'm only person to use wired to router.

Laptop can be good for wired when enternet was built in then no big deal and nothing is difference from desktop, though.

Limited port? that is not true! You can have as many as 252 ports, and this limitation applies same thing with wireless routers.

Actually you can extend range more than 95 meters! Using tall (12 inches) 2.4Ghz antenna OR using wireless Access Point. My Belkin 54g wireless router are capable transmitting 548 meters range if placed outside (it have 2 antennaes). I've seen some website that laptop owner hacked their PCMCIA wireless adapter and rigged wired to external 12 in antenna. They can reach close to 500 meters. My laptop have built in minipci wireless adapter w/ little wired antenna sticking out of card. I can snip it's end and add wire to rig it to external antenna with same manner. If you gotta to have wireless access, then hack it!

As for Wireless security, It is hard to break if using 128 or 256 bit AES-PSK. If anyone using 128bit WEP, they'll get broken in using Airsnort or any wireless WEP hacking softwares (I would say 1% chance or if living in dense population then you're outta of luck!!). Newer wireless now using different signal (5Ghz which mean upgrading wireless adapter either PCI, USB, or miniPCI to match it's signal). Another way is to turn off SSID announce to conceal urself from public.

Don't broadcast your SSID and use WEP and create access lists that only allow specified MAC addresses in and your wireles will be more secure.

Like I said previously, use AES PSK instead of WEP.. Specified MAC addresses would bring even more secured connection. Making it impossible for wifi hacker to break in...

How about WPA2? My Linksys router is only support up to WPA2.

My only point was to use some sort of encryption for added security. WEP with MAC address access list should suffice but any method of encryption adds another layer of security.

yes, it's just basic. It's no point to have bigger range unless you live in mansion house or large land you own. ha.

For some reason, I felt that hacker hack over wireless on someone who have value and I am not. I shouldn't worry but concern on pervert who use my internet for child-porn. I had to put both Mac address accepted and 128bit wep ascii. It would take time for them to break.

someone claim that they able to "listen" instead break mac address. :-T

Yup on different router brands, they have it's own security. WPA2 would be excellent security for wirless IF your laptop or any PC using wireless adapter have WPA2 selection to match.

Yup. IT's possible but you're accounting just .00001% chance around the country. So It's like one little tiny droplet in big area. No worry..

Please refer to "Theorically possible" This means nobody ever tried that, and we haven't hit the limitation so far. Simply because very rare we see more than 20 computers in household.

Think can't? Okay, there is 8 ports router, right? so you get 8-24 ports switch connected to 8 ports router, which would give you 192 ports, then you would add another 2-24 ports switch and 1-16 ports switch, this will make you have more than 252 ports!

Of course, this is crazy, but again it is just theorically possible. :)

Is there wired router with 252 ports at home? :eek3:

How exactly did you run cable to all your rooms?

Right now we have our PC hard connected to the router in our upstairs office. Our laptop is wireless downstairs in the family room, at the opposite end of the house. We would like to use a cable connection but how do you run the cable without making a bunch of holes in the walls and ceiling? Do you have a special technique? Also, is there a special kind of cable that you use for extra long distances so the signal isn't degraded?

Good information thread here...

My both sons want to have their computer with internet in their own bedrooms when they are out of school education and get job. We only have one computer in study room between 2 living rooms and one dining room. I thought about wireless... I do not need cable to connect their computers upstair...?

I fished the Ethernet cable though inside the walls, so it will remain invisible just the same way as electrical wiring. I am certified Electrician, and it helps me alot with my experience. I try to avoid punch holes by using attic, basement. I got good 3-D memory, and was able to figure out around. Sometimes I had to break hole, and I can patch the holes. I did few in garage, it does not matter so I just put in wood square to cover it.

The maximum length without booster or switch in place is 300 meters. That is much more than needed before the signal gets weaken.

Too much holes would affect house's value but not know about what HOA are doing.
