Died in 1922. Get this... His deaf wife was saying "Don't leave me" when he was dying. He answered in SIGN LANGUAGE: "No." Funny for a guy who is againist ASL in Deaf education!

It explained the history of the deaf education. How Laurent Clerc decided to leave his beloved France to go with Thomas Gallaudet to set up the first school for the deaf (American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Conn.). The schools were popped everywhere. Later on, AGB and his likes decided to spread oral method around. Many schools were changed to oralism. Many deaf teachers lost their jobs. Little deaf children were separated from their parents as the teachers were afraid that the parents might use sign language. READ that book!

He got rich from the telephone. His father in law was also very rich and they both were involved in oral method for the deaf. I guess one who has the most money has the final say. I think the Deaf Education should be returned to the deaf people as we understand the deaf kids the best.

Come on now. Quit fooling around. You certainly learned about Alexander Graham Bell in elementary school, along with Robert Fulton, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Madame Curie, Marconi, etc.

It is possible that he missed out on the lessons by being mainstreamed. I didnt know a lot either growing up.

I guess that's what happens when you place a deaf kid in hearing-environment classes.... :aw:
 
I did learn about Alexander Graham Bell in elementary school but only in the context of him being a great man for inventing the telephone. He's a very positive figure to the hearing world so I perceived him as such until I learned in my early 20s he was actually very anti-Deaf and was opposed to Deaf people inter-marrying. That they definitely did not teach in mainstreamed schools!

What? You don't know who ABG is? He's the guy who invented the telephone. Surely they taught you that much in mainstream! And as the other deaf say, he oppressed the deaf who used sign.

Of course not because mainstreamed programs dont teach the history of Deaf culture. Most likely these programs see deafness as a handicap with no history behind it.

No, they don't teach the dark side of ABG in mainstream. I didn't know about this side of ABG till I went to VSDB. I learned even more at MSSD.

that's mainstream education for you. History is written, not actually made. We rarely are told of the horrible deaths the settlers caused, or the diseases that were spread, very little of American History (or any history for that manner) is shown from its true light, very little is unbiased... Americans are outraged by the Nazi concentration camps, but how many people know there were concentration camps here during WWII for Japanese Americans?

I learned about camp for Japanese Americans few months ago. It is sad.

You're so right. One of the most popular classes in the History department at my University was the class that taught the other side of history, i.e. from the POV of those whose countries were colonized by Westerners. Very eye-opening.
 
I posted about Alexander Graham Bell on my facebook. Most of my hearing friends think it is okay for deaf children to learn oral only! That ticks me off.
