I'm working for MCI's Relay call center in Memphis, TN, and will be going to class at Southwest Tennessee Community College.

Two cents from long time college student

At this point, I think it is more important me for to pursue my educational goals and work for a better career at this time. Lets face it. Relay is not a good career choice. Low pay and no job security aren't what I'm looking for.

Cental,

I would do EVERYTHING you can to stay in school. Education is the key to a long term job that's worth staying at. You've already mentioned low pay and no job security, so I doubt that Relay is something you can see yourself doing until transfer or graduation. I spent nine years juggling work and college classes. There were too many days where I didn't know if I was coming or going.

I'm almost 45 and I just left a job with low pay and few benefits. At my age you would think that I should have found a 'career' position. Instead I've worked more dead end jobs that wanted to take advantage of me than to really help me reach my full potential. One manager even said that the job was more important than college graduation. You can guess what I did.

There's a website that I heard about last year that compares the lifetime earnings of people in different fields with different degrees. In a nutshell, the more education that you have the more choices that you will have and more money that you will make (usually). Money isn't everything, but I wouldn't wish the last 20 years of my life on anyone. You can decide to spend your days chasing the biggest paycheck or try to make the world better in some way. Few people can do both. Here's the link:

Best of luck to you regardless of your decision. PM me if you have any questions.

Thanks for the link. I'm convinced more than ever I need to continue my education. I spent all of my high school tenure and my first year off college moping and procrastinating. Primarily becasue I had no focus or motivation. I ended up dropping out last semester because I ended up taking this job with MCI. Looking back, its hard for me to say I regret it, but it was not a healthy decision. This semester, being my last at STCC and here in Memphis, is my chance to redeem myself from last year's flop. Sadly, I'm having to take the Spring semester next year off in order to make my move and get settled in to wherever it is I will be moving to, and to also take care of the housing and job situation, which is looking like it'll be harder and harder for me. I'm afraid I won't be able to find a good paying job like I'm working now and an affordable place to live. I'm looking into taking out a student loan to help keep me on my feet for the next few months.

I vote work cuz if I go to college with no job then I wud have to bug parents for $$ forget it.. so I rather work but maybe one day happen to be bored then take one class for heck of it ;)

FYI, less than 3 percent of college graduates can't find job! The rest of 97 percent were able to find employment.

I think the real problem for people not finding job is lack of assertiveness, persistance, and finally most important thing... POSITIVE ATTITUDE.

I know it is HARD to think positive, but the truth is most prospective employers would look for people with piositve thinking and attitde. You will NEVER find one employer that would want to hire employee with bad attitude, along with rotten thinking. They don't have time for these kinds of bs.

If you have trouble finding job, then IT IS TIME to do your own personal inventory and find out whats wrong with you, or youself in your own picture and work from there. If you don't do this and blaming others, I can GUARANTEE you that you will never be able to be a better person!

Not always. Few of my friends already got degrees and hard to find jobs They have big problem with loan money from college if can't find jobs. Think about that.

That's why I take both full time jobs and part-time student.

Been there! I regret that I partied too much at Gally, and let one woman mess me up with during RIT/NTID. Now, that I have my own son, and own house. I wish I can quit my job and finish my degree, I only need 18 months left, pffft.
Now those friends of mine who was majoring same area as I was, hold pretty decent paying job, 4 times more than I am getting. As of right now, I am struggling to have the desire to go back to school, it is because every time I LET somebody else mess with my life while I was in college. Anyway, I don't know what my future holds.

I voted for work...

I remember I was like that when I was in college. Got out from school, and went to college, I have no desire for college, I dropped out and got a government job, and making money, and I got a car, insurance, got married, brought a house, had a baby, and those bills.
If I quit my government job, how can we afford to live in one salary (my husband's). I don't think so. Got have money to pay the bills, got have money to pay the car insurance and payment, got have pay the house payment, got have to pay foods, got have to pay for doctor, got have to pay for all things you need to instead of owning a lot of money in debt.

To me, I stay with work and making money, instead of asking parents or someone to give money to us.

My vote is.... WORK
because want to support my family living decentable.... and also doesn't want reilable my husband work all the time and expense to support us living and decent too much.
I would love to have a job... One day I'll get a job soon.
:)

Of course not, I don't going for quit bulldog breeder. Prefer stick w/breeder until when right time for my retire. :D

With all the people telling me work, keep in mind that I am supporting no one but myself at this time, and my parents are very willing to help me out with bills until I graduate school.

i think you should go to school and finish your degree. You are still young and there will be like 50 yrs ahead of you of employments, and i can gaurneed (sp?) that u wont be working at relay for the next 50 years. You will probably go to 5 or more jobs til u find the one u are satisfied with. And it will be harder without a degreee.

Well, it´s important to follow your heart & mind...

All what I do is look at me and know from my heart what I stand...

Try to think positive about your feeling what you really know what you are doing...

False.

97 percent were able to find employment what? Just for hearing. Forget about deaf? I see most hearing jobs so easy than deaf. I am sure they got low salary when they found jobs for deaf and sometime hearing. I really sick of most company won’t hired you because you can’t talk on phone and communication.

That’s really bs! Any school for deaf really STUPID! Deaf peoples learn about SSI so they think life become very simple and stay home for get SSI from our damn tax.

Like RIT said 90% found employment after graduates but more hearing than deaf.

WHere is your REAL proof?

Im speaking for BS degrees NOT AAS or AOS!

Where is your proof about 97 percent were able to find employment FOR deaf?

BS degrees do not matter. I know one person deaf who got BS and still work at low salary job.

In fact, Life is not easy.

Who says life's easy?

I think you don't get my point acrossed.

What I have explain in the past that one's failure to get job is because of ATTITUDE! Its SERECT that everybody KNOWS but REFUSED to accept that its the real serect!

If you kept adding negativity in your life, there will always negative back to you! If you quit thinking negative, and accept the life's being UNFAIR and take it on positive note, I can assure that you will be shocked to find how much positives will come to you.

Education First

After my husband graduated, he worked full-time. He realized he was not happy with his paycheck and decided to go back to school part-time after 5 years from graduating high school. We met and got married. We have a beautiful daughter. It was taking him long time to go school as part-time student so he decided to attend full-time. Now, he is 30-year-old and goes to school as full-time student. I am full-time MOM and work full-time to support my daughter and my husband. He stays at dorm during the week and comes home on the weekends since the school is 2 hours away from us. He will finish with school next year. It is hard enough for us.

So I would recommend for you to finish your education first so that your future family dont' suffer. If you do plan to get married and have kids, go to school NOW. School is only few years. Job and family are forever. Your future family will depend on you. Good luck!

I also would like to add this. The longer you wait to go back to school, the more harder it gets as you get older. The older you get, the more bills you get and it would be hard if you are going to school full-time and won't be able to pay the bills.

I really do realize how important getting education out of the way is. Basically this decision was between delaying my schooling for a year, or taking a temporary cut in pay. Luckily I was able to compromise. As of Sunday, I will be a part time RO for 3 days of the week, and full time student for 4 days out of the week.
