Wondering if anyone has one problem area with their cars that are prone to failure? .....

Right now I'm looking at having to replace my ZX2 Escort's alternator for the second time! Most of the problems with my cars tend to be electrical...augh! I had a headlight switch fail on me (ZX2), busted speedometers and tachometers (Audi, Daytona and Neon), alternators replaced one time too many (1978 Toyota, Audi, 1982 Escort, 1987 Escort, and now the ZX2 (x2) ) a dead starter (Daytona) , loose battery cables (1986 Escort) and a fried computer (Ranger)

I only had a few mechanical failures mostly only on my vehicles- 1978 Toyota-water pump and brakes, 1987 Escort ate its camshaft belt, Ranger blew head gasket plus wore-out clutch, Audi had worn-out wheel hubs nearly causing huge brake failure and I could only use the E-brake to bring it to a stop complete.

I guess I must be pretty tough on my vehicles........

Try not to speed so much ;)

Ive always had Volkswagons until my most recent car...Honda. Honda has been awesome like Volkswagons.

Maybe you need to lighten up your lead foot :)

LOL...it aint the lead foot since I now drive like my grandpa! I used to have a foot full of lead but I threw it outa the window heh

It's the enviroment the cars have been subjected to....a mountainous area of East Tennessee along with pretty bad traffic out in Knoxville, along with my tendency to drive a lot at night.

Now you drive at 40 MPH in 60 MPH area? LOL

Yes I understand completely - I drive a lot on mountainous area as I head up to the mtns a lot and also to the coast. It can get rough on the car.

The most common problem with my cars is the alternator. I've had to replace it more than twice for cars I've driven. While growing up, I drove a Jaguar car, Astro van, Blazer SUV, LeBaron convertible, and Cadillac car. I never had problems with the Jaguar cuz it was brand new. The Astro van had a leak in the steering fluid and transmission fluid once. It also had the alternator burn out several times. The Blazer SUV had a broken steering nut and had to be replaced because the steering was jiggly. The LeBaron convertible was my favorite car. I hit a curb so I had to replace the bracket that holds the engine on. I also had to replace the alternator several times as well as the oil gasket. Ugh! Finally, my last car, the Cadillac car, was fixed several times. The muffler had to be welded cuz of holes and later replaced. The alternator was replaced once. I also had to replace the water pump and timing belt at the same time since the water pump locked up and burned up the belt in the process. That's pretty much the problems I've had with the cars. :)

my car is POS hehehehe but i'm glad it still runs that all i care about. :P I had this car for a very long time since 1996 which is 1993 ford tempo gl..

too much plm with this car already... Last month i went to car shop to get oil change and i already knew i had plms with 3 thing which is spark plugs.... coolant leak, and transmission leak. I already knew that. oh wait and themostat ( temperature) but now i found out i need fuel injector repleace and tune up. blah blah blah blah. no way i can get it all fixed .. i'm ready to get a new used car but too bad i can't at this moment... I've to look for a full time job and save up money. *shrugs*

um. maybe I should have voted for mechanical after realizing the "other problems" i have... I voted electrical right away based on the fact that my headlights suck.

My AC coolant is busted. Will cost a thousand to replace the whole system (apparently you cannot replace just the coolant...). A car accident by a previous owner had done it in. No "ahh i feel good" during the summer while my car is cooking inside... BYOIC-- Bring Your Own Ice Cubes when you join my car.

One of my headlights (um, i am referring to the CAR's headlights) is little "droopey"... (one is aiming more low than another)...
my um, um... what do you call it... the one that you will turn on to cleanse away the steam from inside... my driver's "exhaust" doesn't work because something is BLOCKING it (i think the very same car accident busted the interior protection *it appears as if it is supposed to shelter something inside* to be pushed forward and thus blocked the exhaust)...

I need to replace my brake pads.. it is getting thinner-- identified it when I had to replace a flat tire which was caused by a BAD pothole... *shuddering* I am now a potholehobia.

Needs a new paintjob after several fetishsy plants decided to feel up my car doors with their limb-y branches.... or from my car keys as I stumbled around to find the keyhole under no streetlight.

Hm.
But it is a 2000 Toyota Corolla with just 48K miles on it...
[kissing it all over] I love it. I LOVE it.

[EDITED:]
But that is NOTHING compared to my first vechile-- 1989 Madza MPV minivan with zillions of problems caused by my brother's lead-foot and negeclation. The deal was that he could BORROW my van as I learned to use shift-gear and get licensed as well *i had a permit at the moment*... BY the time I got licensed, we had to sell my van for scrapes in total of 200bucks (total of loss: 900 bucks). You name it, we got it. Transmission troubles, defaulted brakes, leaks there and here, bad steering wheel (defaulted wires), torn up backseats, and scratched windows (previous owner used to work for a construction company and i guess he didn't want to get a truck).....
but it fitted 7 people and that was what my friends LOVED about me-- I can take everybody on a trip to Magic Mountain.
I still have the key to that van. Ah. Memories. It died at a gas station down the street from my home.

Ahh This bring back memories of my old cars....

1992 Saturn SL2 (automatic): had it for roughly 4 month, Shame on me I had a hit and run on home street area where I drove on icy street for 3rd time experience driving on icy, no one was on the street but hit the truck's bumper which felled on the the ground and I escaped to a gas station to check my front end and see no stratch hehe, shame on me but I was young and fool, then later on beginning to have a transmission bumping when it changes gears by itself but thank god I totaled it...

1993 Saturn SW2 (manual): had it for 11 months, there were various issues but most of it I fixed it myself such as replacing lights bulbs, Gasket, oil change, nothing that serious except sending to shop to change brake pads until I got into accident, couldn't afford to fix it so threw it away at my loss

1995 Suzuki Katana 600CC (it's a motorcycle so it's manual OFC!): used it for 6 months as my only transportation, did used it in winter time but never on snowy road, got a ticket for 98 out of 75 mph :)madfawk: cops hiding on I-25 in northern Colorado) but end up paying the fine the next day with a fat :), just changed oil, light bulbs, after the accdients, I had to some repairs on the motorcycle myself then sending it to shop to replace new tires, fix the brake and chains (from the accident) then change new battery and sold it...

1995 Saturn SL2: I should kept that car but sometime I go rough on my shifting, mostly just change oil and tune up, light bulbs, the only thing that was so kewl on that car was I made my 3rd middle light flashing while I press the brake light in order to tell other drivers to back away not following me closely, I once had a driver who flashed his light so closely I dared myself to nearly slam the brake and the vehicle behind me slamed the brake but had my bumper bump his bumper little then I floored my gas pedal to escape then swerved from left lane on the highway to exit the highway fast which the guy losted me...

currently 2004 Chevrolet Aveo (manual): was in accident last day of Nov 2004, nothing major now but some minor that need is headlight adjustment and aligment, everything else is fine ;)

Biggest problem with my car.....SOMEBODY (who, looking around) doesn't wash it on a regular basis! LOL!

the most unreliable car I've had was the 1987 Honda Civic 4 door, I've had it for 5 years. It's mainly the carbeurator keeps shutting down and stall on me ALL the time, I've got the carb replaced and still does almost the same thing, damn mechanics! I bought it at 42,000 miles and sold it at 119,000 miles on it. Now, I'm happy with my 1994 Honda Civic which is FAR more reliable than what I had. I got that car with 45,000 miles on it, now it has 71,400 miles. :)

By the way, My roommate has a 1977 Mercedes Benz 240D diesel 4 cylinder. It has 363,000 miles on it and still runs strong. They have very reliable diesel engines around. They can last til 500,000 to 700,000 miles before going on a engine overhaul.

I never had any problem with any of my vehicles except for my truck which I had now. GRRRRRRRRR one thing after another. It so annoyed. Planning on buying another vehicle in 2 yrs from now. My next one would be Jeerp Grand Cherokee since they were very relaiable for me and the best. I never had a problem with that one. I used to have 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee and was still running til my exh want me to get another car. GRRRRRRRR at him. Anyway that what I planned to do get another Jeep in 2 yrs from now.

I have nothing problem with car but front and left headlight makes me nerve when I turned on the engine and make you feeling like vibrate (that's normal) and I can see headlight move like "loose" cause virbate. I will buy new headlight.

It may be the loose headlight assembly, not the headlight itself. It might need to be tightened or need the whole new assembly. Just letting u know in case u didn't know. :)
