JACKSONVILLE - A toddler remains in critical condition after accidentally being fired at by officers in Jacksonville as they attempted to shoot a robbery suspect.

Authorities say 2-year-old old Daniel Crichton was shot in the arm and upper torso on Friday after a suspected bank robber forced his way into the car in which the toddler was seated.

The child's mother, Joann Cooper, was hit once in the foot. A 7-year-old girl also in the car
was not injured.

The suspect was killed but has not been identified.

Five officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office fired a total of 42 rounds at the vehicle.

The gunman did not discharge his weapon.

Boy, 2, accidentally shot by Jacksonville police still critical

Poor kid is fighting for his life.

Absolutely horrible!:(

42 rounds into a car with a toddler inside. Can anyone say "overkill"?

I'm surprised that the police shot into the car at all. There was too much possibility that others would be hit in that scenario.

I wonder if they even knew there were others in that car and what prompted the first shot?

I don't believe the cops did know....the guy hijacked the woman's car. The woman and the boy were bent down in the car....I don't think the cops saw them when they opened fire.....This happened in Jacksonville....but neverless...42 rounds?????...Excessive!....Some trigger happy cops! They are now on suspension....and the Sheriff's Dept. is trying to "cover it up"....but it's not gonna go away!

Last nights news, the boy was still in critical condition...

We've had so much Police brutility here in Jax....the cops are really bad! Many deafies have in the past filed lawsuits about them....All they got was a simple "apology".....hmmmmm

Instead of being afraid of muggers/killers/burgulars....people here in Jax are moreso afraid of Cops!....Go figure!

The car was in the drive-thru lane at a Wendy's, so the presumption would be that there was at least an innocent driver in the car when it was hijacked. It wasn't parked in an open lot where, presumably, it could have been empty.

According to the news story, "The gunman did not discharge his weapon," so I don't know why the police fired at the car.

I guess we'll have to wait for more details but so far it doesn't look good for the police.

From the details available, the police shouldn't have opened fire to begin with.

"Overkill" means to continue shooting after the target has become totally disabled or dead. Since many of the shots missed the target (the carjacker), and we don't know how many shots struck the target, then we don't know how many shots were needed to disable the carjacker.

That is, in a justified shooting, it may take 42 shots (or more) to take down an armed suspect.

The question in this event, was it even justified for the police to begin shooting?

From what we have available, I would say "no." Until we have more facts we won't really know the whole story.

What if the guy who pumped the bullets at the people actually had the same bullets ricochet back at him?

Would it be justice or karma?

I see we are playing the semantics game again...even though we are in agreement in this situation.

Exactly! Even if the cops did not see the children in the car!!

It does not make it right to shoot that many rounds or a round whatsoever, with an innocent bystander (the driver.) which was shot in the foot. Is just ridiculous.

Just don't say it is "overkill"!:laugh2:

If it was the cop??

It would be something else!!

The officer should know when to stand back. Instead of playing hero! Which it did bite him in the ass putting others in danger!
