Absolutely true.

I've found two good working computers AND a good working all-in-three printer/copier/scanner in the dumpster. I took the hard drives out of them and then sold the computers to a friend who is a electronic/computer geek, and I kept the printer as I really needed a printer and a scanner anyway, and it was almost exactly like the one I used to have. Both the computers and the printer/copier/scanner works perfectly. I had my fiance install the hard drives from these computer into my current computer, and now I have a total of 180 GB of hard drive space!

Almost my entire apartment is furnished with everything that came out of the dumpster. (Yes, they are clean - I cleaned them). Only things I bought was the bed and my computer (which I bought in 2005) and my clothes. A friend in Minnesota gave me one TV for my bedroom, and my fiance's grandmother gave me another TV for my living room (both are old). My fiance gave me the DVD player for my birthday. The very nice couch and dining table was given to me by a friend/neighbor who had to move out of her apartment and could not take everything with her as she has no job (she was laid off last month and her car got repo'd a few weeks ago) and no income at all and she went to live in a smaller one bedroom apartment along with her small son, her mother, AND her grandmother a few blocks away. (They were all already living in the one bedroom apartment that share a wall with me, and they moved because there was a robbery next door recently and they were very scared). Everything else were given to me as gifts. I actually moved from Minnesota to Texas with only my cats, my clothes, my computer, and my one TV. Nothing else...it cost too much to move everything I had from there to here, so I just dumped almost everything and paid a friend to drive me down here with the cats and my clothes, computer, and my TV. I bought the bed as soon as I got here. It was worth it, cause I could not stand to stay on that fucking hick farm in Bumfuck, Minnesota one more minute with drunk people. *shudders* I was only on that farm cause I lost my apartment and had to save up money to get the fuck out of Minnesota.

As for the people not believing in keeping clothes after they've been worn once or twice, they are insane...they should consider themselves lucky. All my clothes were bought from thrift stores, with the exception of a very few favorite expensive clothes from Hot Topics that I brought with me from Minnesota. I find it quite easy to dress punk style with thrift-store clothes, all it takes is some creativity.
You'll be surprised what you can find in the trash when you're living in the dorms at RIT. The best time to look in the trash in the dorms are when students are moving out at the end of the year.

I actually found a folding table and 4 folding chairs... all like new! I also found a floor lamp (has 3 lights), another floor lamp (has 1 light), a bunch of DVDs, a bunch of software CDs, a bunch of books (I returned them to the campus bookstore and got some money back), a mini-fridge, another mini-fridge, a few small trash cans, a computer keyboard, some notebooks, some notebook paper, some markers, etc... all in excellent condition. If I already had it, I'd hold on to it and give it to a friend who needed it.

I am surprised the Secret Service allowed the people to get so close with devices, they usually do not. No matter how positive an event or positive a crowd seems they are generally very guarded of a first lady.

When I have worked with the SS, ie. candidates or President in our area, they grab close items that could be a danger.

I agree, Lucia. One day my amplified phone (an old one) stopped working temporarily when my sister needed to make a call at my apartment. She forgot her cell phone, so she ended up using mine. It's a good thing I had it available because she needed to call her boyfriend to let him know that she would be picking up their daughter that afternoon from high school. If she had not made that call, Taylor (their daughter) would have been stranded.

It is clear that the author who wrote the article was only trying to portray or base it on a stereotype - or rather - trying to pain the picture that all homeless people don't have cell phones, cars, or clean clothes, etc.

In some cases, it may be true for some homeless people not being able to afford these kind of stuffs but the bigger picture is, Why would the author question it without taking the time to do a thorough research?

That's one of the purpose of trying to "paint" a picture when there's more to it than it is really revealing to.

Oh, I already know...I was a student at Saint Cloud State University back in Minnesota, and every year in mid-May when the spring semester is over, there are always seniors who have completed college who have gotten jobs or internships clear across the country and therefore can't take everything they have, and don't even bother to sell their things, so they simply throw everything away into the dumpsters and start all over when they arrive at their destinations for their jobs or internships. I and my ex-roommate liked to go around the campus every year during the last week of the semester right after finals in mid-May and we have found many computers, computer parts, a futon bed, books, lamps, trash cans (the awesome kind), couches, dressers, TVs, software, DVDs, etc, you name it, we found them. I ended up selling the computers and computer parts as well as the software for money and selling the books back to the bookstore for money too as well. So much of the shit we found were in PERFECT CONDITION! *smirk*

I have seen many cell phones that still takes photos and not even in service. Don't have to have a cell phone in service to call 911 or take photos. Geez, My kids still play with my old cell phone to take pictures, to record themselves talking, and most of all to play the little games that the phone has.

Just because he has a phone in his hand doesn't mean anything. Just mean it is a homeless guy with a phone that no one truly knows about.

Yeah, the author or the person who took this picture of the guy with the camera cell phone could simply have asked that guy where he got the camera cell phone instead of making assumptions. Do not assume...ask questions first. I will bet that had they asked him, they will be surprised to find that the guy got the camera cell phone on his own or that he either got it through a legitimate program like I did, or it was donated, and that it had nothing to do with ACORN.

Don't ASSUME for it makes an ASS out of U and ME. ;)

Exactly. I was trying to think of how that saying went...I know the saying but I have not heard it again in quite a while so I could not remember how the phrase went exactly. Thanks for refreshing my memory. I didn't learn English until I was 6 and a half years old, so even though I have good grammar and language skills, I still have many language delays and gaps. ;)

Oh, and off-topic...where did you get that awesome avatar of yours, or did you actually make it? It must be difficult to create it if you did it yourself, with all the animations and so many details in the animations. Is there a website that creates those for people? If you don't wanna answer here cause it's off-topic, you can PM me if you like.

Good point; I wondered that myself.

Did you see the bald man standing behind Mrs. Obama? Follow his eye gaze--he's watching that cell phone. :hmm:

Yes. Anything can be a potential weapon.

I applaud Michelle for wanting to get close to the people but from a security standpoint I hope she listens to her SS detail.

I cannot understand why some people try to find reasons to upset over homeless guy have a cell phone when you know that they don´t pay their cell-phone´s bill. It could be PREIPAID phone.... I myself have a preipaid phone and do not need to pay off my cell-phone´s bill. :dunno2:

I find sad that some of you don´t bother to say something nice about Lady Michelle who has a good heart for homeless...

Shake my head...

Funny how some people refuse to see the bigger picture. That is, Michelle Obama volunteering her time at a homeless shelter.

exactly. That's why I showed you this article which has 4 different opinions for same situation. It pretty much shows you how dirty the politic is... btw - I wouldn't say a bigger picture but to get the actual truth.

What does that have to do with my post??? I was talking about security.

...and ignoring the fact that Michelle Obama donated her time to a homeless shelter.
The specific question was asked about Secret Service security, so that is what I answered. It's no big deal.
