I found out today that I am declined for SSI/SSA benefits. It said that I haven't worked long enough for the benefits.

[sighing]

I guess I have to get a full-time job to support myself ... fuck. I find this whole thing stupid because everybody kept telling me to get SSI because they think I should get on SSI to support myself while I attend college full-time and they said that having a full-time job totally distracts you from focusing well in school...
I kept telling them that I highly doubt I will get SSI because they will think I am a spoiled brat...

and I am right.
They don't care about my future. They only look at what I have now and used to have... What they don't realize that my 600$ in my saving account will disappear within two months.
"Oh you dont need 600 bucks, you got your car, you got your VR covered you etc...."
YES BUT WHAT ABOUT FOOD & BILLS?!

God.
They don't care about teenagers/young adults nowdays. They think we got rich parents to run home crying... I can't run to my mother. *bleep* prejudiced pencilhead arseholes...

Yea this really sucks! You're not the only one. Am going thru this myself. :mad2:

gnarlydorkette, was it the first time you applied? Cuz they turn down virtually EVERYONE the first time! I got it second time I applied (then again I have multiple disabilties) Just keep trying and you'll get it. I mean if kids with fake "ADD" can get it....so can you!

Have you tried SSDI? I applied for SSI when I was a teenager and was accepted at first. BUT, before I was accepted, SSI person did not believe that I am DEAF. LOL He ordered a hearing test, which was fine with me. When he got my hearing test results, he gulped. LOL

I tried to apply for part time jobs in San Francisco area, but I was frustrated looking for one. I swallowed my pride and applied for SSI in the state of CA, but got declined. :wtf: I decided to apply for SSDI instead because I have worked a long time. Finally I got SSDI, starting that summer of 2002. I have been on SSDI for two years now, but I will cut off SSDI once I finally get a job somewhere else (hopefully back East Coast).

Even if you don't get SSI or SSDI, I think you'll still be OK - just gonna hafta make sarcifices at school if you're an able bodied person. You're luckier than most, who have to pay all the way through their noses with no VR help.

i tried to apply SSI for my son... they declined cuz i make too much arahh! i just wanna reduce my hours from work from full-time to part-time.. so i can spend more time with my son.. and take more class at college.. they still declined! arahh!

however if i just get SSI alone.. i can't afford to live.. its still not enough for bills, mortgage, etc.. it totally sucks.. all they told me was "apply for finincal aid, talk with ur VR, and get a loan" A LOAN EXCUSE ME! i don't wanna have any more debts!

i guess u're not the only one.

They never believe you. Whether they believe you or not, they will still ask for a hearing test to prove that you're deaf. I know it sucks. I had to do the same thing, ugh!

Have you applied for General Relief? You should go to your local social services office and applied. If you are approved, then they will give you food stamps and a montly stipend for 6 months until you find a job.

Excuse me What is SSDI? Is that for College Students Only? Explain to me the Differences... If you don't mind anyone? :thumb:

i thought SSDI requires some work history that u have done in past... am i correct?

If you speak anything at all during the SSA interview and if you have good speaking skills even though you are legally Deaf, SSA will look at the speaking ability and discount your claim for SSI/SSDI benefits. You have to work a certain period of time to qualify for SSDI. I doubt you need to work before you get SSI benefits. I hope this makes sense.. Just do NOT speak in the interview, use interpreter and signing instead!

Woah, I never thought I would get so many replies-

Philip- no I didn't use my voice. I had an ASL interpreter...

And yes I agree with Cheri- What is SSDI? Social Secuity Disability Income? What is the difference between SSDI and SSI (Suppelmenty *er* Something Income)?

I recently emailed my VR consuelor to see if he is able to help with this. I am going to call the SS office to ask a certain person, whom I met, what EXACTLY do they mean by the fact that I haven't worked enough to qualify for SSI to clarify so I can decide to make an appeal or wait to re-apply in the summer..

After discussing this with several friends who I know that do have a similar background as mine- cheap job wages, living with parents, college student full-time and they said they got it with no problem but the ONLY difference between me and 'em- that my last job WAS in June 2003... and I recollected somewhat that one should have no job in 12 months to be qualified for SSI since it is basically a last resort if one is NOT able to find AT LEAST a job that hires.... I couldn't find my pamplet but does this ring any bell for anybody here?

u should get ssi not ssdi ... SSDI is for who have been work for long times ... and SSI is less five years work in the total i think.... otherwise, Know what ??? These day is getting strict to make everybody get a job not depend on the welfares so u should apply for ticket to work ... so it is better than nothing !
