The peices have been put in place for years. The United States Armed Forces are recruiting soldiers who speak Farsi.

yep and still aggressively hiring especially FBI and Homeland Security. There's not enough of them. It takes several years to learn Farsi especially for Westerners unless they take drastic measure.. which is living in Middle East for a couple years.

Farsi language is hard (says my Farsi friend). Many Westerners who learned it from school do not translate it properly.

If what DEBKA says is true, two carrier task forces are sufficient to take on the Iranian forces. However, a direct amphibious assault on Iran's narrow coastline would be disastrous because of the numerous Iranian troops, weapons, mines, etc., that would be concentrated in that area. Marine assault could be done only by air delivery (helicopters) from near-by Iraq and Afghanistan. That would be detected and probably the Iranians would shoot down the helicopters. There would be no element of surprise. It looks to me like another show-of-force exercise. The Navy has been doing them extensively since the 1960's.

That seems to be a regular exercise. Israel can manage their own coast without our help.

That's a Navy fact sheet showing our current strength. There's nothing implied there.

Whoops. I tried to put in a site showing over 80% of our subs being in the Indian Ocean. But never mind.

Another joint exercise led by the British. Nothing unusual there.

I don't see anything to worry about there.

If there is more going on, it's not evident from those links. We always deploy more in areas of tension than other places.

If something was in the works, all the services, not just the Navy and Marines, would be involved in positioning and preparing for battle. An attack on Iran would require a lot of air power beyond what the carriers would provide. The Air Force would make their strikes from surrounding land bases.

Thank you so much for your reply, TinCanSailor, it made me feel better since it convinced me that our military muscle flexing is being as closely watched by other nations as can be imagined. What a difference a day makes, huh? Today I won't even bother thinking about international strife but on more mundane things like how many snakes I have in my back yard and whether to disturb their habitat. :)

there's a reason why our defense budget is over $600 billion :cool2:

I'm not worried either.

Now, THAT'S something I can relate to. Snakes love my yard and house. :eek3:

Yep. I found several species and my favorite is the hognose snake. They just don't bite, and if you disturb them, they will roll over onto their backs and play dead, their mouths agape, lol. God bless dem snakes.

That is awesome! I hope you do not have a phobia of snakes. ;)
If I had a snake phobia I would have to move.

The black ones are OK.

It's the ones with patterns on them that make me nervous. We have cotton mouths, rattlers, and water moccasins. Those are all venomous.

They slither on the ground, pop out from under steps, entwine themselves in shrubs, and drop down from trees, so I never know where to expect them. We had some on the front porch, and even one in the kitchen. For a long time after that I was very careful about opening kitchen cabinets and drawers.

I kill some of them with a garden hoe (decapitation). Some I leave alone, some escape. When our Labs were alive they used to catch them.

When TCS was out to sea we lived in another house that had a drainage ditch out front. There was a huge water moccasin in the ditch but I couldn't get a good hoe-striking angle on it for a kill. So I called the county sheriff and a deputy drove out to my house. He took his shot gun out from the trunk and blasted the snake. Then he scooped it up and put it into a garbage bag. He threw the snake into the car trunk and drove off. Maybe he wanted to make a belt or hat band out of the skin?

TCS used to do maintenance and yard work at a private plantation as a second job. He saw lots of snakes there. Usually he would run over them with the tractor and chop them up. He also saw lots of snakes when he was on security duty at the Naval Weapons Station (it's in a very rural area). (The gators in those areas are another story. :giggle: )

I also find lots of dried skins that the snakes shed; those are cool--they look like snake "ghosts."

Sometimes the skink lizards make me jump because their bodies look just like snakes. If one pops up, for a split second I might think it's a snake. If I know it's a skink then no problem. I like the skinks and other lizards that we have. They eat the mosquitoes and gnats. :)

Don't know if its true or not but that theres a black snake that crossed with a copperhead and its poisonous and mean.

From the sounds of it, I don't blame you for offing some snakes, lol. But of course you know not to kill too many, because there is a balance in the population that is directly related to the number of prey available: if you kill too many. the prey will overpopulate and you will get an even bigger population of snakes until the situation sorts itself out.
I love snakes. When I was a boy I caught a baby snake and raised it until one day my mom realized it was a copperhead and forced me to give it away, rats. (
I knew an old farmer who drawled that he saw a snake and "killed it right quick" and that attitude makes me sad. On his property I bet I could have found dozens within a pretty small area.
My back yard adjoins the campus riding stables so that means a lot of mice and rats, hence a lot of those good snakes. I love 'em, lol.
