Wando teacher fired for showing 'Jackass 2' plans to appeal
Wando teacher fired for showing 'Jackass 2' plans to appeal - Live5News.com | Charleston, SC | News, Weather, Sports

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -
A lawyer representing a Wando High School teacher says he plans to appeal the school district's decision to fire his client for allegedly showing scenes from the movie "Jackass 2" to his class.

On Wednesday, Charleston County School District officials announced that 36-year-old Christopher Derek Poston was no longer an employee of the school district.

Poston's lawyer said they plan to appeal the decision on Monday. Jason Sakran, school district spokesman, issued the following statement:

"As a matter of protocol we don't disclose the details of personnel matters. As an update, we can tell you 1) we have very clear-cut policies and practices in place to ensure a standard of excellence in every school and classroom; 2) immediately following this incident, Mr. Poston was placed on administrative leave pending investigation; and 3) as of today, Mr. Poston is no longer an employee of the Charleston County School District."

On Feb. 16, the Mount Pleasant Police Department met with the principal and assistant principal at Wando High School in reference to a suspicious incident. School officials say two days earlier, a concerned parent emailed the assistant principal by email about a "disturbing" incident.

The parent said that her daughter was uncomfortable about an incident that happened in her Latin class where Poston, a full-time teacher at Wando, was covering for another teacher.

According to the parent, Poston was watching inappropriate videos on the Internet and put them on the Smart Board for the entire class to see.

The email went on to say that Poston was showing videos of someone putting a "puppet on his junk" and a snake biting the puppet, vulgar gestures and inappropriate pictures of people in Walmart.

A police report states that when someone from the school district came in to work on the computer, Poston quickly exited the program. According to the parent, after the worker left, Poston continued to show the videos to the class.

On Feb. 15, Poston wrote a statement in reference to the incident and confirmed the allegations made. He stated that his actions were unexcusable.

Poston said that while the students were working, he began watching "Jackass 2" from the computer. Poston said that when the students heard the noise, they asked Poston what he was watching.

According to Poston's statement, he told them what he was watching and then placed the video on the Smart Board. Poston said when he saw how inappropriate it was becoming, he quickly turned it off.

He said he showed about 2 to 3 minutes of movie footage. According to Poston, he then opened up a PowerPoint called the "People of Walmart." He said it showed people in Walmart in various forms and used it to express what society expects of people and how people break norms.

When school officials questioned Poston about the incident, Poston said that "Jackass 2" got on the Charleston County computer laptop through his Amazon.com account.

School not allowed watch Jackass during school years for underages till over 21 years old its school district policy

This has been in our local Charleston news for a few days. Charleston County schools have lots of problems.

This is not the right reaction:

...the mother of the student who reported the incident said her daughter has received death threats...

The mother, who asked to remain anonymous because she was concerned for her family's safety, said her daughter has overheard classmates saying they're going to "get the snitch."

...She asked that Poston be counseled about his inappropriate behavior to ensure that it didn't happen again. On Wednesday, she said she worries about the backlash causing other students or parents to be fearful about speaking out when something doesn't seem right.

"We tell kids every day if something makes you uncomfortable, tell someone," her mother said. "(My daughter) knew that it was wrong and she let us know. She did the right thing."...

"Jackass" has no business in the classrooms. And some of those stunts are really off the wall, simply crazy....

It's good the girl reported this to her mother, but sad about all the backlash she's getting for being a "snitch".

If this teacher finds teaching so boring, that he'd rather watch an episode of "Jackass"...then he doesn't belong in a classroom teaching students. That's my take of it.

School not allowed watch Jackass during school years for underages till over 21 years old its school district policy

No, MPAA rating stated that Jackass series are R-rated and anyone who are over 17 years old could watch this movie, especially seniors at high school.

21 years old only applies to alcoholic beverages.

It is just odd because we watched R-rated movies when we were in high school in 2006.

She said it was school district policy.

Umm, I hope the teacher get's hit with serious charges. Sad that taxpayers are paying teachers to watch movies rather than teach. :(

How? He doesn't commit crime or break any laws.

It is just similar situation with someone got fired for watch porn video at workplace.

I learned about this teacher aired a video that contain sexual stuff and nearly nude so it is indeed to be inappropriate, however it has nothing with wrong about R-rated movies since they require special permission from principal and any sexual themes are strongly discouraged. Not all R-rated movies contain sexual theme.

Jackass has no essential with education, except for free time or recess.

I believe he violated the law. *shrug*

All he did was showing a video to high school students who are actually old enough to see R rated movies...why, I bet many of them already saw R rated movies in middle school before high school. At least it didnt include any porngraphy or nude scenes in that movie. It is pretty stupid how people react to nude scenes yet they don't really seem to react to violent scenes.

the only people who can allow them to watch R-rated movies is their parents and nobody else.

Right!....and what, if any, is "Jackass" educational?....Some R rated movies have educational intent, that's why the schools show them. And parents are usually sent a letter asking if their child would be allowed to watch the movie.

If one of my sons got a letter from school or the teacher asking if it was OK if he could watch Jackass during school hours......:hmm:....it would get me to wondering just what the teacher was teaching them.

Are you sure the were old enough? I don't see ages in the article

Agreed, I started watch R rated movies when I was younger.
