Vets remove comb from Denver puppy's stomach - KDVR
DENVER, Colo. - A 6-month-old boxer puppy is lucky to be alive after a Denver veterinarian removed a large styling comb from its stomach.
The comb easily could have killed the dog.
We 'Tyson' with the team that saved his life after the boxer swallowed a "Rat Tail" comb that had him down for count.
"It's as big as his neck," said Dr. David Schulman, holding the comb against the dog's side. "And he swallowed it into his stomach. His stomach is maybe the size of your fist."
Tyson's owners weren't sure what he'd gotten into and another vet clinic couldn't figure it out.
But after Schulman took X-rays, he noticed something causing an opening at the top of the dog's back and causing inflammation throughout his midsection.
"You can't see plastic, but this is where the comb was sticking out," he said, pointing at the fuzzy picture.
He knew it could be very serious.
"It had poked through the stomach wall. It then poked through the diaphragm, into his chest through the ribs and it was sticking out that way," he said.
Surgery on the puppy was touch-and-go.
"We had to cut the comb out from one way and pull the other end out the other way," he said, flipping the comb around.
Schulman says he wants puppy owners to know that at four to six months, they'll eat anything if you aren't watching, including a comb bigger than their stomach and that Tyson is very lucky.
"I've been a vet for 30 years I've never seen anything like that."
Tyson is expected to make a full recovery.
But Schulman says the surgery and care would have cost about $5,000 at a typical vet clinic. However, he's working with the family to pay about $1,000 it cost his clinic to care for Tyson.
An expensive lesson he hopes others will notice and think about with their pets.
