Using 'impaired' shows disrespect

Which definition for sex are you speaking?

A. You are supposed to be a man?

B. Your orgasm is no longer active?

I thought, you aware that I just had a transexuality operation.

I don't think it's disrespectful.

I've seen deaf people complain when they are referred to as "deaf".

I used to work with two black women. Both are not from Africa. Yet, one of them calls herself "black" and the other calls herself an "African American". The one who calls herself "black" prefers that because she isn't from Africa. The other prefers to be called "African American" because it's her heritage.

It depends on the individual. ;)

The term impaired sounds like we're broken...
My hearing IS broken...or to say it better, small bones in my skull are broken.

Hearing impaired seems a lot nicer than saying "deaf and dumb", and from the way it was used in the context of the article, it looks like the author was trying to be polite.

So how else would we describe Galludet? It's a university-created-for-and attended-by-wonderful-capable-people-of-all-races-and-genders-who-can-do-anything-they-set-their -minds-to-and-are-just-like-everyone-else (except-they-happen-to-have-one-teensy-eensy-little-bitty-difference-which-is-deafness).

I find it very interesting that a community that wants to define itself as so distinct, and unique, and special, and make such a big deal about being deaf can't stand for anyone else to mention it.

I agree and I don't find "hearing impaired" to be offensive or disrespectful...

Deaf is my choice! =^)

Non problemo! You decide what you want to be.

I am contented with being :deaf:

We are all human beings regardless of what labels we wear.

=^)

I strongly disagree that the term "hearing impaired" is offensive...

I prefer hearing imapired over deaf.

Many people I know don't find it to be offensive as well... I guess this is because most of us don't believe in deaf culture...
