Different languages destroy a nation. A common language strengthens America.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that different languages destroy a nation. Cultural identity is always important and preservation of one's natural language is something I'd expect - HOWEVER...in addition to whatever native language an immigrant has I think it should be a requirement that they at least have basic English speaking/comprehension skills. If they're coming to an English-speaking majority they should learn the language! If I moved to France, I wouldn't expect them to learn my language to speak to me! I'd be expected to learn french! It works both ways.

It bothers me that a few statements were made in here that "Mexicans do the work no one else wants to do." That is racist, when you think about it.
My issue with illegal immigration is from an entirely economical standpoint.
I had to close down my construction business and move to another city because everywhere I looked, Mexicans were doing construction work at minimum wages, and they were breaking building codes. Honest to God.
I complained to the city aldermen and Congressmen but NOTHING is ever done.
These illegals are sending all their wages back to Mexico, they do not pay taxes, etc. so of COURSE they are a drain on our economy.
It is my understanding that about 50 million Mexicans will move into the USA this year. More on that later.

An editorial from TX

I was born and raised in Texas. Hispanics are the largest ethnic group in my hometown. Here's what one newspaper columnist had to say about immigration reform. It asks a few interesting questions that even George W (a former TX governor) would have trouble answering right now.

Carlos Guerra: Immigrants help pave the way for our comfortable lifestyles
Web Posted: 03/26/2006 12:00 AM CST
San Antonio Express-News

"America does not have to choose between being a welcoming society and being a lawful society," President Bush said Saturday in his weekly radio broadcast. "We can be both at the same time."

Ironic, isn't it, that a nation of immigrants could be so bedeviled by them?

They strain our schools and health care systems, and take Americans' jobs, we are told. On the other hand, aren't affordable fruit, vegetables and wines wonderful complements for entrees that two decades ago were out of reach for so many? And how about our nice homes, whose builders may have included a foreign craftsman — or 12 — and whose manicured greenery is tended by workers we don't ask much about?

If we are living at the zenith of today's Roman Empire, thank global trade for providing us the best products at the lowest prices and for servicing what we cannot outsource at home — often, with a wink and a nod.

Yes, part of our good life is subsidized by immigrants who come here eagerly because substandard U.S. wages are still higher than those in their own countries, where low wages keep costs low on products that are exported to us.

The undocumented live with few legal protections and almost always scrape by on only a portion of their miserly earnings, sending the rest to families abroad. So significant are these remittances that today, immigrants are the primary export of literally every Latin American country.

Two weeks ago, between 150,000 and 250,000 "illegals" and their sympathizers hit Chicago's downtown to protest the Sensenbrenner bill, a draconian U.S. House-approved measure that would make felons of some 11 million undocumented immigrants and anyone who hires or helps them. More protests were held in Phoenix, Milwaukee, Atlanta and Los Angeles.

The bill also calls for building walls along one-third of the nation's southern border and would necessitate construction of hundreds of thousands of new prison beds to house the detainees.

Forget for a moment the impact of taking millions of workers out of our economy, or the cost of imprisoning millions, even temporarily. Don't you also wonder which well-connected contractor would build the walls and prisons, and how closely its workers' papers would be checked?

In the U.S. Senate, meanwhile, several reform proposals will be debated this week, including one by Sens. John McCain and Edward Kennedy under which 400,000 temporary worker visas would be issued to immigrants who may apply for permanent residence after working six years.

This isn't a new idea. We imported 77,000 Mexican workers during World War I and another 4.6 million between 1942 and 1965. And today, 45,000 agricultural braceros get H-2A visas to take jobs Americans don't want and another 65,000 high-tech braceros get H-1B visas for jobs Americans won't perform, at least not at America's going rate.

Clearly, uncontrolled migration is as much a threat to national security as it is to the migrants. But massive roundups, incarcerations and deportations aren't the answer if few of us will pick crops, bus tables or care for the elderly for $6 an hour or less, and fewer of us can handle the demands of sub-specialized surgery or high-end math.

So let's be realistic and use the math we can handle.

Let's first admit that we need foreign workers and then that 400,000 guest workers aren't going to replace 11 million undocumented immigrants.

To contact Carlos Guerra, call (210) 250-3545 or e-mail cguerra@express-news.net. His column appears on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It is a TRAP to "admit that we NEED foreign workers," since if you follow that line of reasoning, you include illegals.

Endymion.... that is a ballpark figure....

The point is we don't need more illegal aliens flooding our borders and taking our American jobs away from us. Even the White and Black Americans are having a very hard time finding jobs for themselves due to the illegal alien invasion that is invading our nation and the illegal aliens (the mexicans, dominicans etc.) are throwing a wrench on our encomony, our American public system that was supposed to go rightfully to who? American citizens, and not to these illegal aliens.

Are you sure it's 50 million? That's almost half of the entire population of Mexico (106,202,903) . . . and all in one year?

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2119rank.html

Lol, that was a typo but I left it alone to see if anyone catches it. I meant FIVE million. That seems a HELLUVA lot but that was the figure I got a couple days ago, admittedly from a blog. The reasons given were the relaxation of work permits granted, etc. (Damn, I cannot seem to find the source now.) Anyway, Bush will have this meeting with Fox of Mexico and it won't surprise me if we suddenly see a spike soon. Ah well.

The Pew Hispanic Center is a good source for statistics:

http://pewhispanic.org/

Excellent detailed reports.

Some figures:

Current Hispanic Population (2004) 40,424,528
Hispanics in Labor Force 19,501,923
Hispanics in School (K-12) 8,416,000
Median Net Worth (2002) $7,932
Percent in Poverty (2004) 22.5%

Following several years of steady growth, the number of undocumented residents reached an estimated 10.3 million in March 2004 with undocumented Mexicans numbering 5.9 million or 57 percent of the total.

As of March 2005, the undocumented population has reached nearly 11 million including more than 6 million Mexicans, assuming the same rate of growth as in recent years.

About 80 to 85 percent of the migration from Mexico in recent years has been undocumented.

Since the mid-1990s, the most rapid growth in the number of undocumented migrants has been in states that previously had relatively small foreign-born populations. As a result, Arizona and North Carolina are now among the states with the largest numbers of undocumented migrants.

Although most undocumented migrants are young adults, there is also a sizeable childhood population. About one-sixth of the population--some 1.7 million people-- is under 18 years of the age.

In the March 2005 estimate two-thirds (66%) of the unauthorized population had been in the country for ten years or less, and the largest share, 40% of the total or 4.4 million people had been in the country five years or less. There were 5.4 million adult males in the unauthorized population in 2005, accounting for 49% of the total. There were 3.9 million adult females accounting for 35% of the population. There were 1.8 million children who were unauthorized, 16% of the total. In addition, there were 3.1 million children who are U.S. citizens by birth living in families in which the head of the family or a spouse was unauthorized.
About 7.2 million unauthorized migrants were employed in March 2005, accounting for about 4.9% of the civilian labor force. They made up a large share of all workers in a few more detailed occupational categories, including 24% of all workers employed in farming occupations, 17% in cleaning, 14% in construction and 12% in food preparation.

heath, i may see u re happy about no more illegal immigrant to work in USA, what about Penelope Cruz from Spain work here to get shot some movies, i m sure some more from other country do work in USA, are they legally working? how fast they got permission? also some students from Europe live here and they go to work temporarly and legally, no difference u said "..job back.."

Untrue. This is a fallacy coming from your weak understanding of the world. America speaks English, Gaelic, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish and a number of other languages.

Heath said:

False. The US does not have an official language. You can look it up if you want. There is no legal official language in the US.

Yes. That's a statement of opinion. That doesn't make it fact or legally enforceable. Go ahead, tell me that bumper stickers count as Acts of Congress. I'm waiting.

Finland seems to be managing with two official languages. The Netherlands with two. The UK with three. Singapore with four. There's a lot of countries that have multilingual people that are far more politically stable than the US.

Um, what? If I left university right now to get a job, in a week I could get five or six offers. Professional jobs and skilled labor are in high demand, and typically illegal immigrants do not have the qualifications to fill them (not that they would be allowed to anyway).

if both parents arent US citizenship yet and gave a birth of their child in USA they could get deported anyway, but their US citizen kids may return here when they're 16 yrs old, like I know parent from Poland have their daughter was born here and they all are deported their daughter was told to come back when she turns 16 :aw:

...

Er...we have noticed this influx in NC. It is causing stress on the educational system and health organizations.

Dude... be more specific thanks. Oh by the way, I worked at golf course with the Mexicans for 2 and half years. They are very very very disappointed and upset with the Mexican Government because theyre obviously so corruptive and greedy. They worked hard the same way Americans DID in early 1900's working HARD earning like 25 cents a hour. Mexico is behind. I admit that. So I HOPE y'a'll get the idea what I'm saying. Any questions?

Heath,

This seems troubling to me. Seems that when the Europeans came to this country, the Indians (Native Americans) lived here and the whites forced them onto Reservations and took away their land. Now, the whites want to do more of this "same-old, same-old" and call it "in the interest of American jobs." Well, pardon me, but I don't see any white Americans wanting to do the jobs that the Mexicans are doing, never mind the fact that they have a stronger work ethic than American citizens have. I support CAFTA and NAFTA 100 percent, as well as international trade! :thumb:

I was thinking about that race relation. I believe that you are right about that. They are getting very complicated and they are conflicted with their culture.

There's certain reason about mexican teenagers want join gangs to protect themselves away from crip and blood (black gangs) but most of them are retire at between 21-25 years old, most of them are start join gangs at around 13 years old. That's not fair that black gangs have been killed alot of Mexicans in last 16 years ago but 1992 is only year is worst in my life.

Now, Latino are now become majority in South LA as many crip and blood territories are gone, some were left in Southwest city of LA, near Inglewood border and Compton border. Compton is bad but crip and blood are still existing and murders are went up as in early 90's, only one suburb had been bad for recent years. Watts are now almost mostly Mexicans, more white than black today, it's surprised me...

Black people are just join gangs so much more worse than Latino does, we had no gang territories in our communities. Most of gang territories are found in South LA, Compton and some part of East LA.

mattmgolf, :)

What I mentioned is part of U.S. history and, from time-to-time, these issues are on the news. How much more specific do you want me to be when you don't pay attention to what the news is saying on both television and in the newspapers? Go back and read history books, I'm not giving a synopsis here, sorry, NMJ.

That's true, Beowulf, but at the same time, it's people like Heath and most Americans that refuse to work those kinds of jobs and they've got the "my shit don't stink" attitude to go along with it!

Oh, really, Heath? Care to prove that? Furthermore, "English" is the official language of the United Nations, not the United States of America. Best check your current events and history before making a pot shot like that. Furthermore, my cyberfriend, we as Americans do NOT speak "English," we speak "American" Anglo-Saxon, thank you! :ty: Do you SEE or ASL?
