Topamax (Topiramate) Medication Profile
Topamax - generic Topiramate - is an anticonvulsant approved for use in treating epilepsy and migraine headaches. It is also frequently prescribed off-label for bipolar disorder. Studies are ongoing to determine its effectiveness in helping manic depression.

sosie,

when i saw my current psychiatrist for the first time and he noticed that i was taking topamax, he asked if i was taking it for my bipolar. (i said no.) he said topamax has mood stabilizing effects starting at 25mg for people who have bipolar disorder which is good news for me because it means that i'm killing two birds with one stone by taking it.

It's also used off label to treat PTSD as well. I've taken it and did well on it. Sadly, my insurance no longer covers it, so I had to come of it.

Glad To Learn

I take Topamax. I was taking Seroquel (don't ask me why). I had a LOT of problems with the Seroquel. It is called an "atypical neuroleptic." I knew that people took Topamax for various reasons, but I did not know people could take it for PTSD. I am so very glad and grateful to learn things from others.

whenever you have time to ask your mother, i'd be interested in knowing what a sub seizure is because this is the first time i've ever heard of it. i tried doing a google search, but couldn't find any information.

Yes, Topamax was prescribed for PTSD. It was released in 1995, I think.

Defgrl, I am glad to hear that you are taking Topamax instead of Seroquel. Seroquel do have side effects, which is NOT good for some people because I heard that some people are complaining about it. :dunno: Actually, I took some anti-depressants in the past but those didn't help me and so, I have to work on my own, with a therapist's help.
Well, here's the link, for example:
SEROQUEL: Bipolar Disorder

i told my psychiatrist to never put me on seroquel for my bipolar disorder because i've heard about *some* people who have problems with continued drowsiness. seroquel is one of the stronger atypical antipsychotics out there and the last thing i want is to feel exhausted all of the time.

ocean mentioned that to me in a pm, but i completely forgot about her message.

by the way, my doctor raised my topamax dosage to 50mg/day. that's good because it means that i can address my bipolar, migraines and ptsd all at once.
50mg is considered a moderate dosage and is known for having a mood stabilization effect for those who have bipolar, so now i'm technically on 3 mood stabilizers (depakote, risperidone -- an antipsychotic that also acts as a mood stabilizer -- and topamax).

if 50mg does not help reduce my migraines, my doctor will raise it to 100mg.
