Hear's Tilly
A TODDLER born deaf has op to enable her to hear | The Sun |HomePage|News

A TODDLER born deaf has become a “chatter-box” after an op to free her from her silent world.

Tilly Buckley-Walsh, two, did not speak or respond to noise until she had a cochlear implant.

A minute microphone slots behind the ear and links with electrodes on the skull to stimulate the nerve which allows Tilly to hear.

It was the 1,000th such op carried out at Manchester Royal Infirmary – the first hospital in the country to reach the milestone.

Tilly’s mum Chinade, 21, and dad Andrew, of Northwich, Cheshire, are thrilled with the results.

Chinade said: “Since the implant she chatters away all the time.

“The operation has transformed Tilly’s life – and ours.”

I do not understand. Why are you surprised by a story of a toddler getting a cochlear implant?

Maybe she is surprised that it is in the news when it is old news that deaf babies or toddlers get cochlear implants?

Could be. But I am surprised that she is surprised, etc.:P

And I am surprised that she is surprised by something so completely unsurprising, as well as you and shel being surprised by this surprising attitude.:P

You win the surprise prize! :P

 I'm not suprised that she won the suprise.

Of course I am not suprised about the news story and I also will refrain from making a comment on it.

Oh, come on, Byrdie, make a surprising comment! You're good at that!

Btw, do you have a biz website? If not, how does one go about inquiring about a stay in the future?

Simple....private message me and I will send the link. :)

I think those stories get published because there are people who like to go awww at such things. Thing is, that kid should learn sign language. One reason that would be a good thing is if she decides to get hired by an organization like the CIA, she'd still be able to communicate in some way without external resources such as paper & pen if an enemy destroys her CIs.

In that way, I see being oral-only with CIs as a security risk because you won't always have paper & pen around if your CI gets fried, so you should know sign language to communicate with those who know it.

How to destroy a CI:
EMP from a nuke or some super secret portable EMP weapon
water
toss it into a fire
simply smashing it

Knowing signs would give you one more way to communicate, so you don't have to depend on paper & pen or the CI in the event of CI destruction when paper & pen is unavailable.

I have a feeling this is going to start becoming more common. You see, the hearing world sees us as broken or not the same as them.

Only those that take the views of the medical model. And its nothing new.

Well, then they should make separate restrooms for us, then, huh? Seriously, maybe we should check the others to see if we've got the same 'equipment' as they've got when in the restroom.

Any takers? Bet that would change their pea-sized brains, not to mention their 'equipment.' :giggle:
