Alcohol does not create the hatred. It simply acts as a lubrication to let out what is already there. It is the disinhibiting effects of alcohol.
Yeah, a climate of hate is a climate of hate. It spreads and reaches the point where you can't control it any longer. You cannot predict who will be influenced and in what way simply by the climate of hate. That is why it is so destructive.
It is an attack that was perpetrated based on a superficial difference. A difference in choice of sports teams.
It was a vicious, unprovoked attack. Why are you minimizing it? I did not say it was a hate crime. I said it is a crime that is borne of hatred and intolerance and a belief that because you believe a particular way, you are justified in attacking someone who believes differently.
Yeah we can arrest and punish them. And it will happen again tomorrow. The problem is societal.
The problem is global. Remember the girl that was run over in China, and people kept walking past? There are countless incidents every day that make mankind look selfish and hateful. There are street gangs that beat people for fun. They don't hate, they just are bored or high or drunk.
I don't mean to minimize this incident, and the press certainly hasn't. It is just a difficult connection for me to make between this incident and a true hate crime; one that is typically based on race, sexual orientation, and the like. I feel that it somehow cheapens the term "hate crime" to use it in this instance.
