This is what happens

Alcohol does not create the hatred. It simply acts as a lubrication to let out what is already there. It is the disinhibiting effects of alcohol.

Yeah, a climate of hate is a climate of hate. It spreads and reaches the point where you can't control it any longer. You cannot predict who will be influenced and in what way simply by the climate of hate. That is why it is so destructive.

It is an attack that was perpetrated based on a superficial difference. A difference in choice of sports teams.

It was a vicious, unprovoked attack. Why are you minimizing it? I did not say it was a hate crime. I said it is a crime that is borne of hatred and intolerance and a belief that because you believe a particular way, you are justified in attacking someone who believes differently.

Yeah we can arrest and punish them. And it will happen again tomorrow. The problem is societal.

The problem is global. Remember the girl that was run over in China, and people kept walking past? There are countless incidents every day that make mankind look selfish and hateful. There are street gangs that beat people for fun. They don't hate, they just are bored or high or drunk.

I don't mean to minimize this incident, and the press certainly hasn't. It is just a difficult connection for me to make between this incident and a true hate crime; one that is typically based on race, sexual orientation, and the like. I feel that it somehow cheapens the term "hate crime" to use it in this instance.

oh it's not exactly a hate crime but it's exactly identical in nature. it all comes down to psychology of human mind. white people attack black people simply because of the color of their skin. gang banger attack other people simply because of their gang color/tat.

In this case, the hoodlums attacked this poor bastard simply because of the uniform he wore. when you get a person drunk, they lose a control of their inhibition which means they act on their suppressed hatred or bias. When I was under influence of some psychoactive substance, the floodgate blew wide opened and I was extraordinary paranoid and fearful so that could mean that I may be paranoid and fearful if I were under extreme duress or if I were very dissociated. I learned about myself and it was scary. that's why I'm a straight edge.

Yes.

The incident in China was a phenomena known as bystander effect, and it is not the result of hatred or intolerance.

I'm sorry, but to beat someone for fun requires that you dehumanize and demonize them. Otherwise, it would not be seen as fun to beat another human being. Where does the capacity to dehumanize and demonize come from? Fear and hatred.

Most likely, this is a crime of alcohol-infused stupidity. I really don't think this represents anything much deeper than that.

It was, they had been taunting him during the game.. It was opening day in LA and they were heckling his Giants Jersey. Dodgers v Giants is a pretty big rivalry. Add alcohol and boom.

same reason why bigotry and racism continue to exist for years.

Exactly. Because society supports the hatred, if in no other way than refusing to acknowledge it and speak out against it. But more often, by actually participating.

The alcohol did not create the situation. It simply let the attitude that was already there be expressed.

Yeah sure. Clubbing this innocent fan would probably still seem like a good idea to them if they were sober. Alcohol never leads to bad decisions.

point is - there are many people who get stupidly drunk but they don't act on violence like these hoodlums. when hoodlums act on violence under influence, that would mean they have underlying issues that needs to be resolved with.

a simple act of drunken disorderly act? I wish life is that simple. laws and order are what prevent people from acting on their underlying issues.

Looks like the U.S. version is pretty tame compared to other countries.

:hmm:

Do you have any idea how lame that sounds? Hey, it's okay for us to do it. I mean, heck, Joey did worse than that!

With moral reasoning like that, it is perfectly understandable why we see these situations continue to occur and become more frequent.
