This is a frightening situation in my area

Thank you. As a former English teacher, I appreciate it.

Ah, I see you edited. Actually, I am NOT jumping to conclusions. I am not saying he is a gang member. But I am saying that a) there is circumstantial evidence that might suggest the possibility, and b) I would not say that anything related to his gang member status is "completely untrue," as I think you are saying in your post above. It is "unknown."

Circumstantial evidence is notorious for allowing people to jump to incorrect conclusions.

I am saying that there is nothing to support it as being true. So it cannot be used in an argument for different punishment, or as support of previous illegal activity, or as a factor to be considered in risk. All it is is an attempt to deflect and judge. Stick to logic and evidence, and your position will retain validity.

I find people who run off half cocked much more frightening than mentally ill patients.

That is why I think that the Media (newspapers and online news) are not telling the truth. The reporters want to make money to make people believed in the false stories. I learned that from my Mom. She had worked in the newspaper office in Chicago before I was born. Also that is where she met my Dad in the newspaper office.

So you don't rely on what the news reporter claimed to say what happened to the patients that got broke out of the fence from the facility. Only way to find out is to call the police and ask for clarification. Simple. Eh? :hmm:

This is not made up:

Since February 2006, Summerville police have been called to the facility 128 times. In that time, there have been 12 missing-person calls and seven reports of runaways, police Capt. Michael Donoghue said.

In October 2009, a 15-year-old from the facility was accused of savagely beating a 64-year-old woman after slipping out a side door, according to a police report.

The victim, Toni Kucish, told police she was climbing from her vehicle when the teen started hitting her, knocking her to the ground. He continued to punch her in the head and shoulders while she was down. He ran off after she screamed for help but was quickly caught by staff members from the center, the police report stated.

Staff members told police the teen had run off after asking to get a drink of water. The teen told police he was angry with staff and decided to take it out on the first person he saw, a police report stated.

Geoffrey H. Waggoner, Kucish's attorney, said his client suffered a hemorrhage six months later that caused bleeding on the brain while she was talking to someone about the incident.

"Not only did the institution fail to acknowledge the attack on Ms. Kucish nearly two years ago, from recent events, it appears that meaningful improvements in security are still lacking," he said.

Of all the things that have been published, the management of the center has not yet refuted anything said by the police.

And even the police will not tell the whole story if there is even a hint that they may have mishandled the case in some way.

News stories like this are written to get an emotional reaction from people. Sells more papers. And we can plainly see, if an emotional reaction is what they were after, they were successful. Fortunately, emotional reactions are rarely objective, and therefore, are not used for deciding justice nor making rational decisions.

Once again, lack of response is to be expected given privileged communication and confidentiality. Just they haven't refuted anything does not automatically indicated that the story is 100% accurate and objective.

None yet, that I know of. Then again, not everything makes the papers. This incident was kept under wraps.

Well, if there was a situation where a law was broken, it should be available to the public via the police reports. Although if they chose to keep a lid on it by not reporting it to the police, then they are only putting themselves in a liable position.

*shrugs*

What makes you think the police mishandled the case? Maybe the center management mishandled the case. Did that ever occur to you?

Let's see. The police, the beating victim, the residents, and the press are all wrong but the silent management at the center is all right.

Guess what? Sometimes the truth does cause an emotional reaction.

The truth according to who?
The police who were called out, the woman who was beaten, the financial reports for the centers that was public information, for starters.

Perhaps, although the word, truth shouldn't be tossed around loosely. I should remind you that objective journalism is becoming scarce these days.

I didn't say they did. I said it is a possibility, given what I know about legal obligations to notify all involved authorities when a probated patient goes missing. Maybe they did; maybe they didn't. We don't know either way. As far as the beating victim, that is another case, not the case referred to in the OP.

Yea, truth does sometimes create an emotional reaction. So does slanting the truth to get the most out of it. As for this thread, I have seen much more than what could be classified as "truth".

Then who would you believe, in this situation?

Then who would you believe, in this situation?

This situation doesn't affect me, so I'm not really determined to believe any sides to the story. People are free to believe whatever they want to.

People can be bad and mentally ill at the same time. Charles Manson, Adolf Hitler, Rasputin.

People can do bad things and be mentally ill at the same time. I don't think a value judgement of the individual is mine to make. I believe that belongs to someone much less fallible than I.

And they will, Banjo, they will.
