Fifty years ago, Gerald Holtom designed the Peace Symbol which was adopted by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It was based on semaphore symbols for 'N' and 'D' inside a circle, which stand for 'Nuclear Disarmament'. Look up the semophore symbols link: The Semaphore Signal Flag Alphabet. History and information about the Gloucestershire village of Winterbourne

I supposed a warmonger might see it as a chicken footprint inside a circle. You know, chickening out of a war. J/K ;)

wow that is so interesting... thought it was invented in 70's but guess i was wrong then! ha.

At first, I wondered why a symbol would be based on naval flag signals. Nuclear energy is, mostly, land-based with ships running on nuclear energy. Upon learning that it was from England, I find it understandable. England is a seafaring nation, afterall.

Like many (I think), I was taught to believe that it was an upside-down crucifix.

I know about Peace Symbol stand. I used to be Hippy chick. I am not Hippy anymore. I don't know why.

Wow, it's almost as old as I am.

Because after the discovery of AIDS and HIV - free love wasn't so peaceful anymore.

I'll bet it was on your baby rattle, Reba.

It was from the time of the beat generation (beatniks); hippies just made it their own, like the "V" for victory sign to mean "like, pax, man."

I was sixteen (but not sweet) when it was invented, but I didn't see it until several years later when I was overseas. Signal Corps guys told me it was from semaphore positions. They knew other interesting signals.

But it looked best on flower girls in bandana halters and hip-huggers with bell-bottoms.

Peace everyone :)
