The fanciest prison in the world....

I actually watched the show on the Travel Channel about years ago. I am not sure if it's the Travel Channel. They said that they built this prison to keep prisoners in from escaping. If one breaks the rules, one will be transferred to more secure prison. Their goal is to rehabilitate them, not punish them.

My Swede friend is half Norwegian, and is a professional tour guide. However, he has mixed feelings about this and is very concerned for several reasons like foreign gangs and mafia coming in from Eastern European countries after they joined EU. He also said that more foreigners commit a crime than Scandinavian natives. Mugging is also out of control there. At first, he liked the idea of EU. Now he had changed his mind after he saw the results. He is officially Euroskeptic.

I seriously doubt this prison is for hardened criminals or those who committed horrible crimes like rape and murder. Since this prison capacity is 248.... it's most likely reserved for those charged with petty crimes like mugging, certain degree of assaults, etc.

I was thinking the same thing. The odd thing is the show did not mention anything in particular about those who committed a major crime like murder or rape are sent to Halden prison. The show focused on the prison's appearance generally. I plan to ask my Swede friend if the prison really does hold murderers and rapists. I am currently talking to him now, but he is busy ranting about Greece being a corrupt country, the rest of the Euro countries suffer from the actions of Greece. There is something else I learned about Greece that had an retirement age of 54 years, and got paid double the month of Easter and Christmas. Sorry about topic off.

Can't say for certain, but since this is a minimum security facility, I would think that it would hold only those convicted of lesser offenses. Those, as well, show the greatest success with rehabilitation in terms of recidivism.

It's funny though, why should we care about how other countries treat their criminals - it's their problem, not ours, right? :)

Kokonut is trying to demonize and mock Norway because Norway is a liberal country with socialist programs. Yeah, that's it.

Amazing that Kokonut really cares and wants to see criminals suffer than to see them rehabilitated.

It is not productive to make them go to prison when the prison is NOT teaching them anything but bring them mental illnesses and lack of skills for the world. It's inhumane and costs us money.

Yep. And then turn them back out into society with fewer skills for non-criminal living than they had prior. Thus creating the cycle of criminality.

We all know Koko repsonds to topics like this from a purely emotional perspective and not an informed and logical one.

Agreed, Socialism can be too good. :)

I know, right? and I don't know why I have this innate hatred toward the word "communism" and "socialism". I must have been brainwashed by the American propaganda and dammit I don't care.

I don't want government-run health care. I don't want socialized medicine. And don't touch my Medicare. Keep your goddamn government hands off my Medicare! :mad2:

It happened to me too but my view on socialism is just normal, also it has pros and cons.

Inhumane? Tell that to the victims, especially those who were murdered or maimed. There's a time and place for everything. Not fearing consequences of one's own action when it comes to committing a crime could prove problematic. Rehabilitation can only go so far. Just because one is "rehabilitated" doesn't mean he/she won't commit another crime again.

As for Norway, I think it's a beautiful country but that doesn't mean I have to necessarily agree with how things are run. Leave it to you to personally complain about certain posters all the time and demonize him/her. No willpower or what?

I doubt murderers would be going to this 4-stars prison

Murderers don't go to that prison. It's for people who commit crimes without violence, I am sure. No one wants a violent criminal, even in prison. That's what maximum security prisons are for.

Do you honestly think criminals think about consequences? I think many criminals often lack the ability to truly understand consequences for their crimes.

Just because one is "rehabilitated" doesn't mean he/she will commit another crime again as well.

What do maximum security prisons look like in Norway? On the inside and out?

There are those who don't care about the consequences, else why would they go ahead and commit a crime?

Not true. Norway has a different way of dealing with criminals of all types. This is the second largest prision in Norway according to the article in the OP.

either way - we have the highest rate of recidivism and they have one of the lowest rate of recidivism. I don't think you're in any position to criticize what it should be and what it shouldn't be.
