It's the digital equivalent of waving at someone from across a crowded room.

And yet a Tennessee woman was arrested last month for "poking" another user on Facebook.

According to an affidavit filed with the Sumner County General Sessions Court on Sept. 25, Shannon D. Jackson of Hendersonville, Tenn., allegedly violated a legal order of protection that had been previously filed against her when she sent a virtual "poke" to another woman on Facebook.

The Facebook poke feature can be used to convey a variety of meanings, including simply saying "hi" to friends, according to Facebook. When you poke someone, an alert pops up in the corner of that person's Facebook page notifying them of your poke.

Although Jackson declined to comment, her lawyer, Lawren Lassiter, told ABCNews.com that his client was "extremely shocked" when the police arrested her.

Just... wow, This is whacked.

It will be interesting to see what the legal ramfications would result from a case like this. I need more info...I wonder if this woman had harrassed the person she "poked" previously and if so why didnt the victim set her FB profile on private or even added this woman as her friend? There has to be something that is not being published.

I agree, There isn't enough information in the article. I, too, would like to know the extent of this as well. There's more to it than what it is telling.

Like you said, if all this were to be like this - the victim could have set her profile on private. It says she was allegedly violating a legal order but what is it? that's what we don't know of.

A person can only poke once. The only way that she could have "harrassed" the other person is if the other person poked her back.

:laugh2: My daughter sometimes poked me at FB, but then she stopped after she joined Farm Town/Farmville and Yoville. From there, we send each other a message. :)

There are two things that don't make sense...

1.) I thought you can only poke people that are your friends.

2.) I thought you can only poke a person once until they've acknowledged your poke (by poking back or ignoring it).

bullypoke? Who knows?

Oh I'm going to bullypoke you!! :giggle:

This is extremely stupid. If she didnt like it, don't poke back or just ignore it...simple? Of course, she can also remove her if she dont like her. I guess she never thought of that.

The poker did something to the pokee and that's why there's a restraining order against the poker so the poker is prohibited from contacting the pokee in any manner. Wonder what poker did to pokee to require a protective order. It has to be something threatening and pokee has to produce credible evidence (often phone messages). Poker must be a real problem.

That brings me to the 3rd thing...

3.) I thought that applications only work between people if both of them had the same applications?

That is what I also thought of too. Although, about #2, Probably in this case - the alleged victim kept ignoring the poke over and over again then the "poker" kept on poking repetitively. This is what may have cause the stem to come from this? :dunno:

If that's the case, then refer to #1... simply remove them as your friend.

A real friend will stop poking if it bother the other person. Of course, that other person would have to say "stop".

Either way, the overall thing is simply stupid.

This person should be given a Stella Award!
