What was she saying?
Diane Rehm is the host of the talk show. Katy Kay was substitute host that day. Katy Kay asked her guest, Ed Klein, former foreign editor of Newsweek and editor-in-chief of The New York Times Magazine, about Kennedy. It was the guest who made the comment about Kennedy enjoying jokes about Chappaquiddick.

You act like the tax payers are paying for this just because it's Ted Kennedy who died. That's not true. I'm willing to bet that tax payers have paid for the funerals of other past Presidents, Supreme Ct justices, and Congressmen.
All expenses for all of them? Are you sure about that?

Military veterans who die of natural causes (non-service connected) get a $300 burial allowance, a small grave marker, and a U.S. Flag.

Ronald Reagan, you mean the guy who declared ketchup a vegetable? :giggle:

It meant a lot to my family tha t my father had Air Force ceremony at my his grave site. He was a WWII veteran. Fortunately, he and all of his brothers came back uninjured. Well, physically anyway. None of the ever revealed emotional damage until they were near death. It validated his service.

Oh I see. Now, I wonder about his special place that we will have to find it out later on the news.

Looks like adulation to me. *shrugs*

Kennedy violated Mary Jo Kopechne's civil rights. That's for sure.

His civil rights voting record were at best mixed. But it's kind of funny since he at one time called the minority picks made by the younger Bush as a bunch of 'Neanderthals'.

Looks like? Once again, you have made a grave error in identification. You really should get that conservative thorn out of your eye. It interferes terribly with your sight.

Ted Kennedy was held accountable under the law. If you have a problem here, it is with the justice system. You are displacing your anger.

His civil rights voting record was impecable. In fact, it was due to his effort that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became legislation after his brother, JFK, was assassinated. But then, I don't expect that you would bother to verify the facts.

Disgusting.

I looked for a transcript on the Diane Rehm website. Apparently they charge $18 - 30 for their transcripts. :(

It is possible to do a transcript from the video and post it here free of charge. I have done so many times. But thank you for the synopsis.

Cast the first stone?? Kennedy killed a lady. And got away with murder, literally. We at AD never committted such a crime (at least we hope that's the case). But he would of course dug around until he found a rule around the rule. At least his son said so. What an ironic truth to that considering that he cheated twice while in college. Cheated his way out of a homicide charge. And basically drank his way into a political legacy.

I have better things to do than to watch a funeral on tv.

Given the circumstances of the accident, there is no way that anyone would have been charged with murder in the case. Perhaps you need to check the criteria for a murder charge. So again, you have made a statement regarding a politician based on nothing more than your own personal emotional reaction rather than fact.

And how many times did good ole boy GW cheat in college?

My time is limited. You can do it for a change.

You'd have plenty of time if you would scarifice a few minutes of searching ultra right wing sites to cut and paste from.

BTW, I have typed my share of trascripts for AD out of respect for those that cannot hear the audio well enough to understand. I would think that you would have the same curtesy for the deaf/hoh community.

That's a member doing a translation. That's not an official transcription.

Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.

Edward Kennedy served his constituents well. For that, I respect him. His constituents turned out to pay their last respects and his widow greeted them. I can't think of many politicians of either party who would receive such respect upon death.

Well said, sallylou. No matter how hard some will try to concentrate on one negative in an attempt to cast dispersions on character, his work for 47 years in the Senate speaks for itself. No matter anything else, his accomplishments on behalf of the people stand on their own merit. Respect for his work was bi-partisan. It is only a shame that the bitter few cannot see that.

I already said "homicide" and at most it could be in the form of a 2nd degree homicide charge: "Depraved indifference to human life." But who knows? Maybe Mary Jo was pregnant with Ted's baby if there ever was one? Then that'd be a reason for a murder charge, no? But we'll never know since no autopsy were performed. Or know the exact cause of death. And people wonder just how far the strings were pulled by the Kennedy clan to keep this "accident" under wrap as much as possible, including dear old Teddy waiting out several hours before calling the police. A nice span of time for any alcohol in the body to dissipate since he was a known heavy drinker.

There were also doubts about the way Kopechne died. Dr. Donald Mills of Edgartown, wrote on the death certificate: "death by drowning". However, Gene Frieh, the undertaker, told reporters that death "was due to suffocation rather than drowning". John Farrar, the diver who removed Kopechne from the car, claimed she was "too buoyant to be full of water". It is assumed that she died from drowning, although her parents filed a petition preventing an autopsy.

I had my share of transcripts for AD, too, and even in my blog, including a recent one a few days ago in AD.

Of course, you'll have that famous "but" coming up next.

I don't know, do you?
Yeah, I'm curious, too. And how often did he get caught and got thrown out of college?

Let's not grasp straws here, folks. Teddy got caught cheating twice! A fact. At least acknowledge that Ted is a cheater.

Ronald Reagan was endeared by alot of people just like Ted Kennedy was. So?

Some people would rather trash those they despise than to give an ounce of respect to those who do not hold their views. I didn't agree with Reagan's politics but I am not going to trash him though I certainly have a few choice words that won't go over well with the Republicans and conservatives around here.

Unfortunately, you are correct.

Not off hand, but I do remember a thread about it some time ago. Seems good ole GW cheated his way through the academy. You are welcome to resurrect the thread if you wish.
