OREGON!? No way ... I'm not going to believe those links you provided. I know my homestate Oregon is not definitely rich.

By the way, in a case if you don't know, Oregon is tax free.

Come to Portland area so you could notice because almost half of population live in Portland metro, excluding Vancouver since it is in WA.

You're not looking at the whole picture.

I live in a state without state income taxes but we pay *very high* property taxes. We also get no state services. Even getting a drivers license is a nightmare.

Any state taxes or property taxes paid are deductible on a federal tax return and reduce federal tax liability. You can pay the state or you can pay the feds. You will pay.

Bingo. Like death, taxes cannot be avoided.

It has happened when there wasn't a recession. If it saves them tons of money they'd do it. Taxing them at a time during a recession is really a dumb move to make. Looking inward in their own govt to try and eliminate any waste or fraud would be a better option.

Eliminating the waste and fraud of big business is an even better option. Stop corporate welfare.

True, but on the whole, Texas has a pretty low tax burden. It seems like it's all the states with the really high tax burdens who are having the most financial trouble right now.

Unless you're living on Great Slave Lake with a self-powered houseboat. Then you're completely tax-free since you're living on crown (federal government) property... and it's not like they can kick you off of living on a lake...

And yes, there are people that go out of their way to do that up here to escape the tax laws, and it's legal too!

I doubt we need to worry about them bankrupting the state. I'm fairly certain their numbers would be approximately the same as the 1% of the top 10% of the wealthiest. Not really a significant number.:giggle:

darkdog, my husband and I have a really high tax burden. High federal taxes, high property taxes, sales taxes, licenses, etc. We live in a neighborhood with an excellent school district which raises our property values and creates more tax. Heck the state even taxes my brain with an attorney tax. I'm happy for you if you're not getting hit as hard.

Yeah. Not my lifestyle too.

Living on a solar-powered houseboat with a few windmills...

Fun.

I would love to have a legal tax debt of $5,000,000 based on my salary. That 1% of NY residents that pay 41% of the state tax revenue; I imagine they earn over 35% of the income as well. Oh the travesty of paying a higher percentage! If they move to Wyoming, just imagine all the ranch land they could buy with the savings!

I wouldn't mind living in roomy boat.. as long as I have reliable electricity and internet

:type:

as long as you are single. yeah!

Jiro can coax any females into living with him, even a cardboard box. I bet you he can convince a millionaire to move in with him into a refrigerator box behind an Italian restaurant in a high-crime area.

If he can do that, a house boat is no problem-o.

you make it sound like i'm a whore :giggle:

Another point: We're talking about the government is taxing earned income. Investment income like stock profits are taxed at a capital gains rate which is significantly lower than tax on earned income. That means that people like us are shouldering more than our fair share of taxes.

As the old saying goes, the rich get richer and the poor gets poorer. I wonder what it's like to be in that rich category? I wouldn't know!

I mean on the whole. According to the Tax Foundation, Texas was number 43 for high tax burdens (1 being the highest, 50 being the lowest). The Tax Foundation - State and Local Tax Burdens: All States, One Year, 1977-2008

By the way, where exactly do you live, if you don't mind me asking?
