The reason why new formats keep coming out is because they are more advanced and better than the previous formats.
I wouldn't want to stick to just one format for my entire life when I know they can be better.
Though I don't think you have anything to worry about. You won't have to replace your movies on DVD at all. You know why? Because Blu-Ray/HD DVD players can play DVD movies. So the option is there for you to upgrade to a 1080p player without having to give up your DVD collection.
This is a better situation for us this time around in comparison the VHS-to-DVD transition.
P.S., Apple, Inc. shouldn't and will not change their computers to the PC platform. Though it is now possible to run Vista on the new Intel Mac computers with Apple's Boot Camp software and some other softwares due to the x86 motherboard.
