Swine Flu Outbreak

You dont seem to realise how dangerous this flu is.....

It's not really dangerous, it's just like any other flu except this is a mutated strain from the previous mass scale epidemics in the 1900s.

If you are really freaking out then you should only be if:
A. the media has gotten to you.
B. your body is in poor physical condition or can't handle a flu.

But to be honest, there's nothing wrong with freaking out about it. It keeps you safe which will keep you from getting sick, if that matters to you or not.

Otherwise, just go out and do your things with a chance of getting sick and a really really small chance of dying from it.

To make this simple, It's no really different than dying from an auto accident!

But experts have warned that so many million will die from this in the next 6 months

I'm undergoing a major in microbiology. Viruses and pathogens are the main part of my studies.

If you understand the purpose of what each and every pathological threat to mankind, you will see that the most dangerous ones are contained or are currently unknown somewhere in the wild. The major killer ones have been "contained" or are only accessible by high government areas for researching.

The problem is out in the wild, they are always mutating and developing off small animals or small towns until they reach a point where they're able to cause massive damage which is the entire human race. This is the simple idea of "natural selection" - Darwinism term at work.

This H1N1 (Swine influenza) variant is particularly mild for what it attempts to do. Take a look at the virology of it to understand how it attacks the human body and what does it do while attacking. The chief area of exploiting that the virus goes for is the respiratory/lungs area, it attacks mainly anything associated with breathing.

If you have a weak respiratory system, like if you have asthma, then definitely this is not only contagious, but will be more likely to kill you than the average person. If you are in strong physical shape, athletic, it can infect you, but chances of it killing you compared to someone with asthma the odds should be much lower.

RE: Don't really freak out until you start seeing government officials wearing orange/blue hazmat suits walking around outside. Then you know you are in trouble.

You really don't need to panic about this, Deafteen. But do take precautions just as you would to prevent catching any kind of flu or air borne illness. Frequent handwashing and use of hand sanitizer is the best thing that you can do.

Hmm... cute.
That's cute... my mom sent me that last night!!!

Thank you for trying to help clear this up...

It's also more likely to be destructive in areas where sanitary practices aren't all that great... where soap and CLEAN water are not as readily available and these hand sanitizers are even more scarce...

Everyday we're at risk for new mutated viruses... thanks in part to antibiotics and antibacterials... although we think these things are 'miracle cures' they actually cause these pathogens to change and develop into new viruses...

Absolutely. Overuse of both antibacterials and antibiotics have created problems with mutating bacterial infections, not to mention the fact that they lower our natural resistence to many bacteria. Mersa is but one example. Antibiotics do nothing for a viral infection.

One of the easiest ways to get the flu is to pick your nose with contaminated hands.

Two cases in Florida have been confirmed, by the CDC. One in Lee county and the other in Broward.

One is a 11 year old male and the other is a 17 year old female.

no hand sanitizer to be found where I am....was actually out picking up some stuff in the store and went to bathroom and there was a silver dispenser on the wall next to door that said something like "stay safe - please use tissue to open door" - no tissue left in the thing. Bathroom was totally out of the hand sanitizer by the sink as was the actual store-

H1N1 appears as of now to be not as bad as they expected to be. But still to early to say.

If it is still around by next flu season. With no vaccinations. It can create complications.

Swine flu vaccine may be separate from regular shots

Swine flu vaccine may be separate from regular shots

WASHINGTON - Americans might have to line up twice next winter for flu shots — once for the regular jab and again later for swine flu protection.

There is no vaccine against the new strain of swine flu that's rapidly spreading across the country. Nor has the government decided if it's going to order full-scale production of one.

Regardless, expect to get the regular flu shot. Manufacturers already have a lot of it brewed in advance of fall inoculation campaigns.

"If a vaccine for this new virus is prepared, it would be prepared either in parallel with or after the seasonal vaccine is already produced," Dr. Nancy Cox, flu chief at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Friday. "We would be able to have the seasonal vaccine and then if necessary as a supplemental" vaccine against the new swine flu virus.

The World Health Organization has put vaccine makers on notice as authorities grapple with this puzzling new strain of flu. It hit Mexico hard but seems to be causing milder disease in the U.S. and elsewhere. Standard anti-flu drugs can treat it, and the CDC said it doesn't seem to be spreading any faster than regular winter flu. But because people have never been exposed to this novel strain — a mix of pig, human and bird viruses — a race is on to develop a vaccine.

Influenza vaccine production is a long, complicated process and vaccine makers already were in the midst of making about 130 million doses of next winter's, plenty for usual demand.

Much of that production is done, with large amounts of vaccine already stored in holding tanks to be bottled later, said Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, a vaccine adviser to the federal government.

"We already have it well under way," agreed Donna Cary, spokeswoman for Sanofi-Aventis, the world's largest flu vaccine maker. The final total "really depends on when that switch occurs."

The U.S. clearly expects experimental doses of a swine flu vaccine: CDC scientists and some collaborating laboratories hope to deliver to manufacturers in early May a virus strain properly engineered to be a vaccine candidate. It would take manufacturers another eight to 10 weeks to brew pilot lots for testing in small numbers of people this summer.

But the big decision, as health authorities debate how big a threat this new virus really is, is whether to order that large numbers of vaccines be brewed — and if so, if they would be administered quickly or stockpiled to see if the new flu makes a comeback.

Officials told Congress Thursday that if necessary, manufacturers have the capacity to produce two doses for every American — or 600 million total — within six months of beginning full-scale production. Usually one dose is sufficient for H1N1 influenza strains — the family to which this virus belongs — but human testing is necessary to be sure with this new strain.

Combining swine flu with the regular winter shot "was considered and won't work," Schaffner said.

Because swine flu vaccine would be rolled out gradually as more and more was produced, Schaffner said the challenge will be dealing with public confusion if people need separate vaccinations weeks or months apart.

"Maybe we should start tattooing the vaccine record on everybody's fanny," Schaffner said he quipped to colleagues. "Just organizing things will be enormously complex."

Interesting!

My 14 yr. old is going to Universal Studios next weekend..but I'm not sure if I'll let him go...just waiting for more news....I think avoiding large crowds of people is best right now....

Nothing is safe anymore, let him go and enjoy in Universal Studios. :D

what i cant work out is, how do they actually know its from the pigs, and specifically from Mexico, moreso, what farms, and how did they know all this in such a short time frame, WHILE they say they claim to know how to predict how wide it would spread as in saying its potential and how the media got hold if it, as in maintaining the 'scare level'?? look at bird flu...it didnt happed as a pandemic but yes they found out alot along the way, its just im amazed at the response speeds is all...

sorry this seems a real dumb question its just no body seem to ask this.

Lab testing. perhaps..

The Medical advisory and CDC, rather to treat it seriously. Due to the fact, that H1N1 is so new, and they did not know how it would effect us. Rather to be safe than sorry.

Viruses constantly mutates. So probably why they are handling it the way they are.
