Students Avoid Expulsion for Hazing

GLENVIEW, Ill. (April 19)- Eleven high school lacrosse players who were caught paddling younger team members as part of a hazing ritual won't be expelled but must complete a community service project.

The school board deliberated for nearly six hours Sunday before deciding to allow the Glenbrook South High School juniors and seniors to remain in school and make up work they have missed during a recent two-week suspension.

''This decision was made easier by the students' acceptance of responsibility for their conduct,'' board president Carol Rogal said.

The students faced expulsion for a hazing incident at a March 12 off-campus party, during which the 11 players allegedly used a wooden paddle to whack 13 new team members during a rite-of-passage ritual. The party at a team member's home also allegedly included underage drinking.

School officials canceled the varsity boy's lacrosse season and suspended 24 students, including the players who were paddled.

More than 70 students, parents, teachers and other community members packed the board's meeting room Sunday, mostly to plead for the board's leniency.

The board's decision allowed the 11 students to return to class Monday. They must present a report to the board in May addressing underage drinking, hazing and proposing an appropriate initiation for new players.

Some parents said they thought the board might have felt pressured to expel the students because of a widely publicized hazing incident last year at Glenbrook North High School, in which 33 students were expelled and 20 disciplined.

Videotape from that incident, during which senior girls attacked junior girls during an alcohol-fueled hazing ritual at a forest preserve, was played internationally on news programs.
