Stop from destroy southern forests..

Hi Coloravalanche,

I did my Southerner's Duty to sign the petition.

I am # 8,510

My comments were :

As a Southerner living in Pennsylvania I see the effects of logging and I do not appreciate the same thing happening in the Deep South. Stop that or I won't shop at Officemax anymore.

The large paper products manufacturer, Westvaco, is located in my area (South Carolina). They own many acres of pine plantations (those are places where they grow and harvest pine trees specifically for industry use).

Reba, do they re-plant the trees ? They should but we have better ways of using less paper and put recycled paper to good use. We are in the Information Age now and we should be consuming less paper since everything is going electronic these days.

In Minnesota, for every tree that is taken, I believe that three trees are planted in its place.

*Snort* I currently work in IS and have done so for many years and I have yet to see that we are saving any paper with Emails, Word Docs and on it goes. Seems like we generate more and more paper and thus more and more trees.

Makes me wonder what computers are good for (don't get me wrong but it is frustrating) if we can't eliminate paper... :dunno:

Some places are trying to reduce the paper.

At the college where I work, they no longer provide the students with printed syllabus, schedule, calendar, catalog, financial statement or grades. It is all on each student's private internet account.

A lot of banking and bill paying is electronic now.

All of my work assignments and invoicing are on-line. Nothing paper. All office and employee communication is on-line or cell phone. Pay is direct deposit. I do get printed financial statements.

If you really want to see an office generate a lot of paper, visit a law firm. I've visited several large law firms, and I've seen the walls of files and papers stacked every where in their offices and halls.

That's been around for a while here in Pacific Northwest. In Olympic Pennisula there's huge amounts of land where they cut down mixed coniferous forest and replant with new trees and they wait for 30 to 50 years until they are big enough to cut over again, they have it scattered on the property owned by Weyescheuer (sp) where headquarters is based in Federal Way, WA. Of course there's lot of recycling programs for paper, plastic, glass products in Seattle metro area, too.

By the way, I signed the petition for stopping to cut down the southern forests.

You are correct about some businesses seem to get the idea but it is really irksome when IS sometimes doesn't get the big picture.
